Are there two relays by the air box(or where it used to be)? One of these relays was the engine management relay and the other dealt specifically with fuel. Fords of that model year were notorious for the plugs and the relays going bad.

I am betting on a dropped timing chain. the cam gears are nylon and the material crumbles over time. pop the distributor cap and the number one spark plug and see if the rotor points to where #1 is when you bring the piston to top dead center on the compression stroke.
Its an easy fix, they're dealer parts. I had to do it to mine, but I've seen some butcher jobs on wiring harnesses to fix this litte problem.
