Posted on the Axle forum not to much response. Just looking for some input on if it's really help w/ braking or not. On the other forums I've read about it having to change the prop valve, and others not. If you had to what would you change it to, a vehicle that has 4 wheel disk?
i know our local offroad shop does not like disc conversions. danny meyer 4x4 put my rear shoes on and adjusted them and they have been great better than a lot of the 4 wheel discs i have seen. i never have personally had them, but if i had the money i would probably try it just to see how much difference it would make. oh yeah and thanks for the input on my problems with my truck hoss i look forward to seeing how it goes with your disc brake conversion
It is not absolutely neccessary to change your prop. valve. I put discs on the back of my tj and my buddy put discs on the back of his '72 blazer with a 14 bolt. We both felt it significately improved the stopping distance.

x2, swapped the proportioning valve after the upgrade just to see the difference.
started with a 12 bolt/ drum setup with 35s.... upgraded to 14 bolt with discs and with H1's and 38s.
I think it stops better then the 12 bolt setup did.
the proportioning valve was a difference but can be done later.
I had a 1979 blazer with a 12bolt rear that I did a disc conversion on. I did not change the valve. I used front dana44 rotors, s-10 calipers, and weld on brackets that I baught from a chassis shop in Muskegon. It worked great. If you want a parking brake use cadi calipers. Most chassis shops sell weld on brackets to fit almost any caliper. I paid less than $30 for the brackets.
Right now my blazer doesn't stop the best, when i had the manual in it i could use the tranny to help stop in. But now w/ a bbc and auto tranny it's gonna be ever harder to stop. it also needs some brake work up from too. I already have the biggest bore master cylinder on it as well.
in my opinion i think that disc brakes will help stop your truck a lot better. yes i know i dont have that much experience with disc brakes, but from what i have been told and what danny meyer said to me is that sometimes disk brakes work too well and create skidding in the rear on the road more so than drum brakes do and thats why i decided to stick with drum brakes instead. but i think for hoss's application disk brakes would work better. from the information he gave. i think next time i need brakes i will definately go with disc brakes because i have heard some good about them recently
Put discs on my Tahoe when we swapped in the 14 bolt SF. They work great. me and Matt2500HD on here made them at work one day. Still running stock prop. vavle.
I did a setup on a 14 bolt using 2500 hd rotors that slid on over the hub ass. Then we used chevy b body calipers with some allstar weld on brackets. Had less than $100 in the whole setup. We used a master from a mid 70's corvette with the stock prop valve. Worked very well on a 6500# truck.
Thanks guys, the bend is also why they are $50 and not $66, its less expensive to bend them and after more than 10,000 pair in 5+ years we have never had one bend...The force dosen't come from that direction at all...
Heck, you guys are from the manufactureres belt, every auto manufacturer in the world has been bending them for 50 years...
I run disc on my 14 bolt and it works great. I tried the stock prop valve and didn't like like it. After switching to an adjustable, it great. I have enough stopping power to lock up all 4 tires if I want to.
