What's the best way to get it off a dog?

I've been googling for an hour and it seems the ol tomato juice doesn't really work.

I saw a few mentions about possible off the shelf products from pet stores and there were even a couple of recipes for homemade concoctions using peroxide, but I’m worried about it being harsh on my dogs skin/coat.

Any good ideas or personal experience?

I’ll be wearing lots of layers and rubber gloves so I’m not the smelly guy at the office tomorrow :teehee:

well good luck, when the skunk sprayed lilly a few months back the whole house smelled like it for about 2 weeks and we never even let her inside. Tried the tomato thing but didnt work maybe you will have better luck with it. If it dont work i think it was only 8 or 9 bucks

take the dog to the groomer and make it someone else's problem. We tried tomato, the dog stuff from petsmart, mouthwash and vinegar. We ended up with dogs that smelled like skunk plus a bunch of other crap. We took them to the groomers and they came home smelling like baby powder.

peroxidemix, lestoil, i've had good luck with dawn and fabric softener mix any grease and oil remover. the skunk spray is an oil, if you use anything that doesn't cut it all it is going to do is smear it around and make the dog stink worse. if you put tomato juice on the dog it will smell like a tomato skunk and make a mess.

as for getting it out of the house boiling vinegar works awesome.

DIRT! You think I am bullshiting you I am not...take a bunch of black dirt and rub it all over the dog, rub it real good and get it down in the skin and then just bath him as normal. Good old southern trick I learned from an uncle who use to **** hunt and his dogs would get sprayed every now and then...I tried it with my dog when he got sprayed and it worked real good.

For the dog:
1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent
Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.
For spray in the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible.

For the house:

This is sold at petsmart and petco

*** The wash for the dog might bleach the dogs fur, but a bleached dog is better than a stinky dog anyday.***

A side note.

Sometimes with the super stentch of skunk something called olfactory fatigue occures when exposed for long periods. Keeping the dog in the garage was a good idea.

He/She may not smell as good as you thought last night. If this is the case just was the dog with that stuff again and it should be ok.

i was thinking the same thing, well that and i had tissues stuffed in my nose :teehee:

I might even give her a bath again tonight to be sure.

It was a very interesting experience to say the least, but my wife was happy that i now have one less set of old clothes!
