I bought a 79 Wagoneer as a project a few days ago. I had to tow it on a dolly, case in Neutral and trans too. Was going to pull rear shaft but couldnt with the tools I had. Pulled fine and got it home but seems like trans or tcase went. Don't have much experience with Q-track full time. Might there be anything to check/look for before I look for replacement? Fluid in trans seems fine (not burnt/correct level). I was told its a 360/th400/229? If I have to replace...
Will a Chevy th400 swap in?
Upgrade tcase with 208,205?
This is a ultra low budget rig that will see Silver Lk. mostly.
Sorry if these are lame questions...I'm trying to understand this Jeep thing!
Thanks

Well i figured its time to start a build thread for my TJ. Not that its gunna be any different then anyone elses but I've finally got it about where i want it.
To start of I bought it in maybe decemeber last year with 2in coil spacers and 31s and was a DD, its got a 2.5l with a 5speed with only about 10k on it, i have all the receipts for the new motor that went in. I've changed the distribute cap and rotor and plug wires but thats it in the engine.

few flex pix

Then i got some 33 swampers for it and some wider rims also put on tube fenders for more clearance in the front, also put a lockrite in the front

It wheeled really well like that until i broke 4 teeth of the rear ring gear so I put a ford 8.8 with 4.10s and LSD in

I really like that 8.8 in there, then i put herculiner on the floor and the back to protect it a little

Then i got some 36in TSL radials on some 10wide rims put them on to see what they would look like

Then i bought a rough country 6in long arm kit that took me about 2 full days of working on it to put in, also got a SYE and installed that as well. Its beed a long week for me installing all this by myself

And this is about where i want it really. I just finished today so I gotta make a rear driveshaft which i have all the parts to do it i just have to weld the pipe together, gunna try it in the onekama fair sunday.
My next step will be to connect the roll cage to the frame and install 4.88 gears front and rear. I'd like to keep the 4 banger really but some day the 5.7L fuel injected chevy motor will find its way in there. so tell me what ya think, thanks
