GPS Question

So I have an old Garmin GPS V that I used to use for turn by turn navigation. My new car has built in DVD nav, so I have no use for it now.

I just went hiking in the Smoky's and took the GPS V to track where we went and see the distance we travelled, but was pretty disappointed in the performance. It kept losing signal, and nothing showed up where we were. We passed a gu ont he trail with a GPS that had the trail on it, the stream running next to the trail on it and all the tiny details and it got a great signal.

Anybody know what type or model GPS I would need that would have detailed enough info took take hiking in the mountains and have everything show up? And does extra software need to be purchased? I put the Garmin Topo maps and detail maps on my GPS V but it didn't do anything.
