2 strokes and the environment

i am looking at possibly trading/selling my CJ project for a bike to take to/from school and work.

I know that my gas consumption will go down, but emissions are a worry to me. in my price range (1500 or so) i am thinking older 2 stroke enduro type bike... how awful are these on emissions, anybody know? I am guessing that newer 4 strokes are better on the being green.

any advise on where i should look for bikes, or what kind i might be able to get if i can sell/trade CJ.

i have ridden dirtbikes and whatnot here and there, but this would be my first time commutting on such a machine... advice would be appreciated

i have about a 15 mile commute one way, and can take all back roads into downtown

A properly tuned two stroke can be pretty green. Espescially DFI engines. I don't know when/if that technology was put into dirtbikes.

Kawasaki KDX 220 or 200 are nice 2 stroke enduro's. They come with headlight and taillights but you can put turn signals on them as well. Easy to handle, lighter than 4 stroke enduro's.

Two strokes aren't the most road friendly bikes, and it would probably get annoying. I would look for an older xr650 or something along those lines. Also, two strokes suck down gas and good oil is expensive.

For $1500 you should be able to find a cheap 4 stroke bike. It will get far better mileage and you won't have to mess with mixing gas. There was never a DFI or even EFI 2 stroke bike so I don't even know why it was mentioned.

Find a nice cheap XT225, DRZ250, XR, KLX, KL, or one of many other 4 stroke street legal bikes that run around $1500 used. You can get up to 70mpg out of the smaller 4 strokes.

green *fucking sigh*

if your worried about emissions an old 2stroke is not wat your looking for. Their fuel economy sucks shit for their size and power, they smoke when they're running properly, and gas and oil will literally drip from seams in the exhaust pipe.

sub 500 cc road bikes from the 70s are still pretty cheap
