4X4 not engaging

How do I test to determine if it is my vacuum shift motor that is causing my 4X4 not to engage? I shift into it at the transfer case and things are good at the rear wheels, but the front isn’t engaging.

If it is the vacuum shift motor failing, I see a popular approach to repair is the installation of a Posi-lok kit. Thoughts?

Crawl under your heep and check it out. That is the ONLY way you will find out if it is operating. It is real easy to take out. And once it is off the axle you can see if it is moving when you pull that shift lever. As long as you have a good shift actuator, it usually works fine. But, other alternative (besides teh posi-lock) is to just stack a bunch of washers behind the shift fork and leave it engauged. It works, and it's cheaper.

make sure there is vac through the lines running to the diaphram on the front axle. if there is no change when you shift from 2 hi to 4wd them the vac switch on the Tcase is bad.

just pack washers behind the shift fork, easy fix, done in 10 minutes, and for less than $1
