I am currently making an inventory of the Holton/Twin Lake area with my TomTom GO510 (modified of course, since factory tomtom's are useless for off-road and recording tracks.

All my tracks are in gpx format, and I found a way to overlay them on both topo and 3d terrain maps. Im getting ready to go out for another round today (and its raining so it might get fun).

I am gonna try and mark the files with points of interest as well. (I have already found OLD building foundations, OLD cemeteries, and what appears to be a ghost town out in the forest.

I also know a ton up near beulah and traverse city, and it is not that for of a drive for me, so next time I am up there I will map those as well.

I am finding that many of these trails do not even come close to following the path marked on the topo maps after you get off the beaten path a ways..

This is a really great idea. If there is any way I can help, I am more than willing. Most of the jeeping we do is on county roads. I am always worried about staying on public land. The last thing I want to do is be somewhere I should not be.

GLFWDA is doing the same thing of sorts.
Instead of duplicating efforts, it sounds like we should get together.

PM me your phone # if you're interested and I'll give you a call.

More info on mapping

I live in Muskegon. I have a Magellan 315. I like to go off-roading. I would be more than interested in helping with this. I would also like to get the information. Coordinates, sites etc. How can I help?

Jeff

I have a tomtom One 3rd edition. The instructions do not work for mine. Is there anything anyone knows so I can get it to work?

You gotta install third party software on it.

Keep your eyes open for announcements for "KOTARO" mapping dates.
KOTARO = Keep Our Roads And Trails Open
It's a 'system' we've worked out that will allow us all to collect data the exact same way that is easily transfered to the government if needed AND allows users to know what kind of trail the 'track' represents.

A track is a track is a track.
Is the track a paved road, dirt road, two track, or 4wd trail?

We'll be scheduling one very soon.

Pat,

I would be interested in helping map out trails as well. I use a program called Tracky for the Pocket PC what will save the trails in a GPX format. I have already mapped a lot of the Yankee Springs trails and I had my program recording when we went on the Twin Lake trails a few months ago. (I have refrained from going back to the twin lake trails since I was unsure what areas on the event where on private land, but I do still have the files.)

Thanks!

I need to schedule a KOTARO Training date for all of you.
I'll make another post.
