boxing in a frame

i was woundering if anyone has boxed in their frame,like on a ranger or bronco 2 etc....?? And how hard is it? Cuz im getting way to much frame flexing and its cracking my body...Some pics would be nice..thanks

it's going to be quite a bit of work....when you say frame flex craking your body, how so? does your suspension flex or is it stiff leaving the flex to the frame?

When you box a frame, you get the joys of re routing all the stuff inside the C-channel on the outside of the metal........this can be a huge pain with brake and fuel lines on an older vehicle.

You might be better off addings some crossmembers to the frame for extra support

Or like me where I have to rip out everything in my channels anyways because it's all rotted, but no welder to close it up *curses

The only bit of advice I have to offer is to do only very short welds and keep switching areas as to not allocate too much heat in one particular spot, it will actually bend stuff out of allignment from heat expandsion. When I took welding even welds about 1" long distorted the piece I was working on if I wasn't careful (I got better towards the end).

SandBlast the frame or wire wheel the piss out of it. make u get all that rust or the frame will just rot from inside out, but other than that Captain nailed it preatty much.

Yup...we've done it before but it's a ton of work because of all the crap you have to remove and/or re-route to do it. But it is doable.

i just went and seen the frame to day and damn those Bronco 2 frames flex a lot just with a bigger tire on the drivers rear caused the whole frame to twist bad i could only imagine what would happen when you start jumping that thing brad. im sure it you left it alone it will look like your other B2 the one that you never jump ever:tonka:

well i still have to run the brake and fuel lines,so that not a big deal.i just wish i boxed in the frame before i put the body back on....and Jay the other B2 the one that I never jump ever, thats like your heep that you never wheel hahaha.

What vehicle is it?

There are severla articles about boxng and strapping frames over at Pirate, but if you don't spend for a red star, you can't search right now...


With a Jeep frame, save the hassle, toss the stock frame in the trash and build a new one from 2 x 4 x 0.120" steel tube. Everyone I've seen who boxed in their frame *correctly* said they'd have built a new one from scratch, as its much easier.

I'm planning on building a new frame for my CJ3a in the fall.
