The only downside to the cheaper winches is that they are quite slow. If you plan to winch alot, it may be an issue for you. If you plan to use it more frequently you may get frustrated with the speed. Check out Ironman for the T-max winch.

I had a Champian for a summer that worked great, but like stated above is on the slow side. You also gotta look at all that you get for $400 though. That winch mount , which is universal for most winches is about $125 by its self. Snatch block is also included soooo ....

a couple guys in my club have the champions and are very happy with them, i have the harbor frieght in 10k for almost 4 years and its been a good winch for me, if you just need a basic winch either would be good

I just got a Summit Tools catalog. They have a rebadged T-max in there for reasonable price. Still like 600 though.

I bought the Harbor Frieght 10k. I was hesitant, but I did a bunch of searching the net and the new ones people seem to be pretty pleased with. Slow, but they work and are cheap. I like mine so far. I also bought the extended warranty so I'm covered for 3 years. They'll give me a new winch for anything. Heck, if my cable breaks, I get a new winch. I figured what the hell.

ok so ive been driving around all day trying to look at winch's

here is what i have found 100% truth

harbor freight 8k is 300$ on sale normaly 399$ does not have water proof cylinoids so need to be replaced asap
but it is the same winch as a ramsey and a mile marker 100% for sure just rebadged guy who had one was ther says it works ok on his jeep just slow but works

summit racing they make a rebadge t maxx i called summit they told me thats what it is. the summit brand is about 200 or more dollors cheaper then any wher i can find a tmaxx for sale so i think im gonna get a 10k tmaxx thru summit its like 490$ and its the sumergabel one ther site dont say that but if u do your research and look at the case sense thers non and sumergabel ones u can see it is

then thers smitty built i think that is a tmaxx also but cant be sure

couldint get to see one at tractor supply company they have none
500 on order none in stock but its a champion and it runs 399$ for a 8k
sams club website and some stores carry them in stock same winch but a 10k
for 360$ so hmm lets see more pulling power for less money thats a hard one
what ever i end up with i will put up my findings but think im gonna do the summit 10k inless i hear bad about tmaxx

Chubs,

I am a dealer for T-Max winches and can tell you that the Summit winches are rebadged T-Max's for sure. I will send you a pm with more information.

There was a thread on pirate about the smittybilt xrc8 sharing parts with milemarker. Guy had tore into his to check it out and found mile marker stamped on many of the wires....He had posted pictures but I can't remember which part of the board I seen it on

from what u hear smitty built is still pretty good correct??
im gonna by a 10k summit or t maxx but my buddy wants a cheaper one so from what i have found i think he should probly buy the 8k smitty for 300$ inless u guys say other wise think its best bang for buck i dont like the plastic engagment for the gear to free spin or engage on the
mile markers/ramseys/harbor freight i can just see that breaking

I agree with the plastic engagement lever, but it hasn't broke on mine yet so that must mean something. Besides, it's covered under warranty! lol

Then again I guess if you plan on the winch pulling you up waterfalls and potentially not killing you, spend the money. If your main goal is a stuck here and there and maybe some obstacles, then I'm ok with my harbor frieght because I'm poor. Probably in another year or two though I plan to upgrade to a better/faster winch.

I think that is the most important point, knowing what you want to use it for. I have a HF 8000# and love it, sure it's slow, but i'm not trying to win races. I use it for self recovery and pulling out bushes etc

basically it works great for what i use it for

my roommate and I both have harbor freight winches, his a 8000# and mine the 10000#. hes had his for nearly 4 years now and it hasnt coughed once though its starting to get tired. He used it while wheeling rocks in MA for two years and it dragged his rig sideways without much issue. the 10000# for $400 at harbor freight is an awesome deal too. put it on my '75 F250 and it pulled it sideways through 15" of heavy snow on 36" tires this past winter.

just my 2 cents

I have a Champion 8000# which was $300 at Costco with a mount plate roller fairlead and a snatch block. Works great so far. I was in a pretty bad accident and the winch broke so I called them and I had the replacement part in 3 days with no charge.
