im looking at a 460 stroker engine for my 400EX on ebay .. i emailed the guy asking about longeity he says it'll be fine will last a long long time blah blah but anyone will say what you WANT to hear to make a buck..
here's the listing Would this engine last ? I mainly do trail riding and dunes once every other month or so.. Ps im looking at it because my current engine is locked up and the crank bearings a shit..

I dunno - sounds too good to be true. Says TC racing did the rebuild, you could call them and ask how that engine would enjoy your stock carb and exhaust.
I think it is the beginning of a big headache for you.

I have used bigbore kits on several bikes..2 & 4 strokes, street and dirt. the only problem I ever had with any of them was heat, but it depended on the bike...but you could add an oil cooler to help with that....other than that no issues..you start have problems when you mess with cam timing and bumping up your compression

I have big bore kits on three bikes and I am able to use my stock carb on everything (though my wife's 150-turned-175 would definitely benefit from a 26mm carb )

I used a 26mm carb on an 88cc honda, so yea I think you'd be safe bumping up!! |

like mike said heat is your issue i personally dont like bg bore kits in the 300 and 400ex's due to them being oil cooled. just doesnt seem as affective to me.if your gonna do it use good parts or you are just gonna waste your time. really if your not planing to put and exhaust and do carb work your not gona have that storker motor run to its full potential.IMO try and stay as close to stock far as bore goes and if you feel the need bump up the compression a little. whats wrong with your motor that you dont rebuild yours?

My friends and I have done so many its not even funny. Do your research. 400ex crank & rod can't handle the big displacement. Trust me on this. For the record the old 440s had the squish calculated wrong, thats why many of them ran like ass. 400exs plain suck dick compared to the more modern 450s, even at 460ccs they just don't put out the power. Compound the fact that they are air cooled and you are just asking for disaster. My new project is another 250R, +5 stroker and a big pro-x cylinder. I just got back from Saint Anthony sand dunes in Idaho and realized that my little stock R cylinder just wasn't cutting it. On my YFZ I was hitting the hills in 4th WFO and by the time I got to the top of the hill I has barely moving in 2nd pinned.....Thats the land of horsepower out there!!!
