Looking to buy a GPS any advice?

Well my dad sold his bass boat with the hand held GPS he had. Now he wants to get a new one. Not looking to spend any more then $300 and i don't even know what to look for in one. lol. we do a lot of hiking and backpacking. And he wants one that is color and easy to read and use. Any suggestions?

I'd highly recommend a Garmin GPSMAP76C or 76CS.
Alternatively the GPSMAP60C or 60CS.
Either one of those should set you back for under $200.
With the leftover money you will want to buy MapSource City Navigator 2008 or 2008 NT maps for street level auto-routing and adresses.
Later you might want to add the Topo 2008 maps. It offers more datail on bodies of water and terrain features. You can load both mapsets but can only view one at a time. So CN for autorouting you to the campsite and them Topo for hiking.

There is enough room on the 76 for both mapsets of all of Michigan (and then some). The 60 has a little less memory but you might be able to fit all of Michigan in both mapsets.
For the ability to use SD expandable memory cards there are the "x" models...76Cx, 76CSx, 60Cx, and 60CSx. If they had "S" in the model names then they have a digital compass and barometric altimeter and less battery life. The "C" models have a compass and altimeter based on satellite data (so you have to be moving for them to offer reliable data)...but have longer battery life. I prefer the "C" models, myself.

That 76C with CN maps would be an awesome setup with a good focus on hiking/backpacking AND still be a good auto navigation unit.

i can not find ither of them gps for under 200 :-( They are around 300-350 but am looking at them a lot
