Garmin 276c, 376c, 278, 378, 478 Pricing breakdown. Might save you some money.

My dad was playing with my 276c, and he told me to get him one, or get the newest model out. Well after doing some research, I found out something very odd. They are all identical. The 276c was released 5 years ago, and Garmin still produces them.

Don't fall for Garmin's marketing ploy of releasing "NEW" model numbers with inflated prices.

Besides the 276 lacking XM weather, these 5 gps systems are EXACTLY IDENTICAL.

The 278, 378, and 478 all come with the navigational package (with speaker and street software) that you can purchase for the 276/376 for $160.00. The 278, 378, 478 have "pre-loaded maps" that become worthless after a couple years, and you end up having to buy a large memory card anyways to store the updated software.

What is the Nav kit? I was under the impression you could just use it with the internal antenna?

We bought 2 - 276C's as giveaways at some of our shows...

The nav kit gives you the software so that you can actually use these for on road directions. The 276C only come with bare minimum road maps preloaded on them (only interstates and major roads). The nav kit also includes a car charger for the unit that has a speaker on it for audio directions.

Without the nav kit the 276C would really only be useful for recording your ofr road tracks or maybe to use for geocaching. If you want to use it for on road directions you need the nav kit.

What about those extra 20 vertical pixels on the 278?? That could be the difference from me being lost or finding my way......

I have had the 276c for about 3 years now and love it. Of course, I purchased the extra memeory and the topo maps I already had from previous Garmin GPS units.
I have several different mounts and move it from the jeep to the ATV to the Truck to the bike. It has been thouroughly rained on for hours and continues to work exceptionally well.
