GPS and Geocaching

I'm new to this website, but am an avid geoacacher. It's one of the reasons I just bought a new Jeep Sahara. Are any of you geocachers? Geocaching is high tec treasure hunting using a GPS to find a container with a log book and trinkets to exchange. You can find geocaches just about everywhere, but the most fun ones are the ones that are hidden way out in the woods. Visit www.geocaching.com if you want more information about it. I geocache on occasion. There are a lot of good ones in Michigan. I have yet to go find one here in Texas.

i try to go out caching as often as possiable. i have found some very cool places due to geocaching.

The wife, kids, and I try to cache as much as possible. We'll be in Nashville next week, and plan to get a few around the capitol while we are there. Victorymike on here is the king of geocaching. Anything you want to know he can tell ya!

I also use billion dollar satellites to find Tupperware.

I found a couple of your caches north of Traverse City, including a FTF (First to Find) for your "Skedgemog Point" cache a couple of weeks ago.

Really got into it a few years ago, didn't seem to have the time to do many last summer though. Thought I recognized your name, you have one on the disc course in Kalkaska. I actually play alot of disc golf too, think I will try to hide a cache on our new course next summer.

I recognize your name, and have done a bunch of caches around TC...but not in a few years. If you want some recommendations for true 4wd caches to hit in the U.P. I can recommend a few. I even had to use my winch at one...4 times. Man ,that was a powdery, sandy, hill.

I recognize your name to. Hope you find some of my wierd container caches if you come up to TC. I have not been up to the UP in a year or two. Now that I got a Jeep I think I'll head up there for a weekend after the snow melts.

Thanks! Your're right, snow is not stopping me. I had a close call last weekend though (check out "Conserve your energy" cache). The only thing that is stopping me now is time. Too much work and not enough play time!

I'll have to go give that one a try, the kids have snowshoes now.

A friend turned me on to the geocaching website.
Joined up, and now I just want better weather to go out side.
Daughter is exited to start this with me.
I couldn't bieleve how many there are close by.
Looks like fun!!!!!!!
No laptop or palm.
Do most of you just print the page description and take it along??
I did the "send to gps" button. so it's in.
Got a Garmin E-Trex Legend C.
Any tips for a newb??

Buy snowshoes, don't wait for spring! Once you've dug through a few feet of snow, you'll really appreciate Spring when it gets here.

I printed pages for awhile and now just send it to my phone using Gsak and Swiss Army Knife. I also log from the site using my phone so I've hit an all new low. I'm really pathetic.

Tips...pack granola bars in your backpack and take along plenty of water. I use a pack with a water bladder or another trick I do is pack the cooler full of frozen water bottles, they act as the ice and we have water as they thaw out.

Biggest thing, keep it fun. Don't get stressed out over it (a lot of people do) and have a good time.

We should start a list of what we keep in our back packs, it would be interesting and someone might have something in theirs no one else would have thought of.

Head lamp
Flashlight (we do a LOT of night caching)
Way to many Hooters wet naps stolen after multiple meals
mini first aid kit
Pencil sharpener
zip lock baggies
camera
Kleenex
Benadryl (I really should post about the day that made me buy this for the kit)
Hand warmers
Gloves (I REALLY hate putting my hands in a hole etc without gloves on)
Ibuprofen
Hand cleaner
Plus the obvious, cache stuff.

This picture is of my 13 year old, taken today while out caching. He was convinced he was going to be able to find it. Sadly we were in about 2 feet of snow and there was only so much he could do. A for effort though!

I load it to the GPS.....but also print the page for the description, and hints if i need them.

I have a Garmin 60Cs and figured out how to load the hints on to it via gsak. Don't ask me how I did, because I doubt I could duplicate it in a rational readable manner. Garmin has just come out with a GPS designed with Geocaching in mind, the Colorado 400t. It holds 1,000 waypoints and 1,000 cache pages, pre-loaded topo, better accuracy, and has "whereigo" (a offshoot of geocaching involving virtual objects). They are a little pricey at $600. I just ordered one anyway and hope to get it in the next few days.

Digging in the snow for a geocache out in the woods is a one-of-a-kind experience, so there is no need to wait until spring. After finding caches in the snow, without snow seems a lot easier.
