Tie down method
Hey guys, I just picked up a new car hauler. I am going to ask a debated question. Do I tie down to the axle or the frame? I am sure this has been asked before. :miff: :dunie:

I use (7) 10K rachet straps and short axle loops to go around the axle.
Front: (1) the middle to the axle. (2) criss crossed from trailer corners to front bumper d-rings Rear: (2) straight from trailer to the axle, (2) from corners of the trailer to hitch havent lost the jeep yet |

The problem with tying to the frame is that when the suspension on the tied-down vehicle flexes over a bump in the road, the straps can go slack.
If possible, you always want to tie to something that isn't sprung. Everyone I know ties with axle straps around the soid axles or other suspension points. The only time I hauled something tying to the body was a CRX drag car. It took 3 stops to re-tighten everything before it stopped moving around.

I tie down from all 4 dring tabs with 10k straps. Criss crossed front and rear.
I don't like to tie to the axles and have my Jeep bouce around. The straps are VERY tight and the suspension is compressed pretty well. Never had a problem. |

if you guys have ever seen rollback wreckers they use whats called "sports car J's" its a 6-8 foot double strap with a D ring center and two 8" J hooks. if done right you hook it in the rear to the center of the deck and you then only need one strap in front. if you think about it the worst load you put on a trailered vehicle is stopping, when you stop you streach everythng out, when you take off from a stop you don't generate 1/6 the force as stopping so its less likely to move. rollback use a winch up front to do the job Vs. a strap. I prefer the 15,000lb ratchet straps. I tie cars to our auto roller at work and I have hung Dodge diesel Mega cabs upside down from three of them.

I used to tie to my frame until I took a trip out to Utah that way using (4) 10K ratchet straps. My fronts were criss-crossed, my rear straps were straight and compressed the springs good. Problem is, now my rear springs are now sagged after sitting that way for 3 days straight under that load! Now I need Add-A-Leafs to bring them back!! So now I'm going back to the axles!

x2When I towed for my bro in law's landscaping company we used to just set the brake on the mowers in the enclosed trailer, but it was only on short trips. I doubt that the guy drove all the way there and the car didn't shift once, but it is possible. |
