Be good to your trans and DO NOT tow in OD (especially if it keeps shifting in and out). Only a preventive maintainance measure.

We've been through this before it says right in the owners manual not to worry about towing in OD on the newer trucks.

Thanks though

Smiley's opinion, or GM's?

Hmmm......

and when I say lotsa in and out of overdrive, I mean it shifted as it came to hills, as expected. I coulda just left it in 3rd gear, but I was turning 3500+ rpm at that speed.

I also wanted to experiement and see what the mileage differences were according to the computer.

65 in od = the same as 85 in 3rd gear for mileage.

In fact it seems no matter the speed the mpg's seemed the same.

I understand what the mfg says. I spoke of preventive maintainance.

They also say you can go 100,000 miles without an oil change.

Think about it. You shift out then into gear shave a bit off a clutch (minute amounts each time). The trans releases torque then increases torque (U-Joints?). Saving money in gas?

Your money

Go find a different thread to bicker about the stupidest things in the world.

So your telling me my trans is gonna fail at 150k now instead of 175k? seriously, I towed in OD in my last truck as per the manufacturers specifications. 170k+ on the ticker when i sold it, original trans, had no problems at all. I perform all maintenance as mentioned in the owners manual as well. So you tell me? am I still doing something wrong?

I can assure you that I am going to continue to follow the manufacturers recommendation. I can also assure you that the tow haul mode does a very good job of avoiding ridiculous amounts of gear hunting as I call it and it really is not a concern at all.

Where does GM tell you that you can go 100K without an oil change? I have the same truck as uprocktoy and my computer has me changing my oil about every 6,000 miles.

I am on my third GM truck and have towed with all of them in OD with tow/haul on. Never a problem. For all the miles you actually tow I wouldn't worry about it.

And to answer your question Chad, mine has always run about the same temps you are describing. I don't know this for sure but I think the new digital dash's will give you a warning when it gets too hot.

I am at 5,000 miles and the computer is stating I still have about 35% oil life left. I figure after my 1000 mile trip this weekend I will be due for an oil change.

i wouldn't worry about towing in OD with towhaul mode on. the whole reason they have that mode is for towing duh. if you were towing in OD without towhaul on then i would say thats a bad idea, but the transmission ups line pressure alot higher in towhaul, so no damage will be done.your temps are fine for towing actually thats pretty cool for towing.
and just for the record the whole reason your not supposed to tow in OD on OLDER trucks is becauase they had no way of increasing line pressure to prevent clutch slippage and also didn't have towhaul mode to prevent gear hunting at freeway speed. thats the whole reason and i know this cuz i asked the master transmission tech at the dealer i worked at.

Kodiak I am with you, I mean listen to GM or Smiley?

They designed it, they stand behind it with a 100k warranty. It doesn't really shift that much anyway, I am sure in a super hilly area it would be different.

yup. he who designed it knows it best. i think the only thing from GM i don't agree on is there oil life monitoring system. i change my oil religously at 3000 idc what the monitor says. having done more oil changes then i can count, oil is pretty well expended at 3000 unless you have synthetic then you can make it to 5000 tops. idk how exactly they come up with the formula to say that oil has no life left in it, but i don't think it works very well. the good point about the oil monitor is it makes people know that they HAVE to actually change the stuff. idk how many cars i've seen with more then 10,000 on a oil change with standard oil. ouch. i did one chicks car no lie 42,000 miles since last oil change, and she was wondering y the oil pressure warning indicator was light up...lol. you can fix a broken car but you can't fix a stupid owner.

haha I disagree with you there. On my new truck I will change the oil according to the monitor. On my old truck I went twice that. usually about 7500-10,000 per change. Same with 2 of my cherokees, one of which 2 or 3 gl4x4 members have owned since then and I think it is still going strong, it was high mileage when I bought and sold it. So its got to be real high mileage now.

I think the oil change concept is somewhere in the middle. The oil companies and places like Jiffy Lube are making big business by telling people that the oil will break down by 3000 miles. I have changed oil several times at 6000 and it is still perfectly clear and clean. I also think the the auto companies have a better handle on how their engines run and the oil breakdown than any of us. Lubricants last a very long time unless they get overheated or they get contaminants in them.

Why is it that people think they need to change their oil every 3000 miles in the engine but not in the differential? The answer will always be heat. But, who of us actually knows how hot the oil is getting and how quickly is it breaking down?

non-technical opinion from a desk jockey ~ manufacturer's recommendations on usage tend to be conservative. remember, they want to do everything to reduce their warranty costs and product liability issues. thus, the manual is likely partially designed to protect them as much as it is top "protect" your vehicle. your opinions?

smiley your are a n idiot. with the tow haul mode gm has its very easy on the trans and holds 3rd gear when it needs it and instead of wasting fuel running down the road it uses over drive when it can. my trans temp will run around 180-190 when normal drivng and gets to about 210 when plowing

actually i'm guessing he was referring to a trans fluid change.

But yes, I'd go by the tow/haul mode unless it started to seem like it was shifting constantly, but being this on a rather level section of highway from MT. Morris to Fenton. Tow Haul mode would work well.

Rocky Mountains, Appalachians, maybe a different story

Where did he say he used "Towhaul mode" in the first posts? See my point?

Ford has been stating "oil change at 100,000" since 2002.
