Garmin 60csx - about $350 - 375 handheld style. Leave off the barometric altimeter and magnetic compass and save about $50. Good display, scorching fast, excellent reception.

If you want a larger vehicle-type screen, it'll cost more than $300...

I've had GPSes for over 12 years.

My first was a Trimble ($$$$$), and then three progressively better Garmins (GPS 12, GPS V+, 60Csx). They all still work perfectly. Garmins hold up, and they stand behind them (buddy put batteries in his GPS III backwards and damaged unit out of warranty - for $50 Garmin repaired it and upgraded the software (including shipping).

Garmin MapSource software is pretty good stuff.

Check GPSgeek.com for antennae, accessories, etc...

The only other GPS that ever interested me is the new Bushnell - where you can download satellite photos and maps that it will display - i.e. it shows your location and tracks on a GoogleEarth-like display. It looks and sounds exceptionally cool, but I'd have to see it in action first.

x10 on Duffman's talk about Garmin. I'm on my 6th garmin, and I have loved every one. They just serve different purposes!

So do all GPS's just use preloaded maps?

No.

It's gotta be a "mapping GPS" - some just show where you're at (lat/long) and the way (straight line) to a given point or how to retrace your steps.
