Kawasaki Bayou ??

I just picked up a 1988 Kawasaki Bayou it is a 4 stroke with an automatic clutch so you just shift gears. I have been working on it and just got it running but I have a question about the oil it takes. Does the transmission operate off the same oil as the motor? there is what seems to be two fill wholes on the motor the one is on the right side for the oil fill but there is a recessed screw about 3/4 in dia. on the left side ( if your sitting on it) and I dont know what it is for I thought the motor and trans work off the same oil but this almost seems like you would fill a seperate fluid from the left. Does anyone have any idea's

Thanks,

D.J.

I am still new to quads myself, but I do know that they take seperate oils....on the one I picked up for my kids, the engine takes 20w50 and the trans takes 80w....there should be a window on the right side for checking the trans level as well.....dont overfill as that will F' up your tranny.

on my dirt bike, the drain for the tranny is on the bottom, and the fill is that big flat head screw that you are speaking of....dont see why it would be any different

good luck

There is no sight window on the left side of the case that is what is throwing me off. I have been told they use the same oil but nobody knows for sure. The motor takes 10w40.

the site window for my kids' quad is on the right side....it would be right up by your toe on your right foot.

here is a service manual for it
http://www.themotorbookstore.com/kawbaykl19.html

here is a kawasaki forum for you to ask Q's there if you would like
http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/fo...saki-atv-mule/

here is a thread on that forum talking about oil....looks like the oil is 10-40 maybe you are right
http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/fo...300-bayou.html

good luck

I owned a 220 (1998) and it should have a sight window on the right side right by the foot peg.

That is an air cooled engine and there was only one place to put oil in on mine therefore it uses the same oil for the transmission as the motor.

I bought mine from the Kawi dealer--supposed to be a little better for the high heat (air cooled) application.

I used to run mine wide open for some pretty long stretches in the middle of summer and never had a problem.

Enjoy
