AMC20 Theater. No, wait, Axle.
Yeah, an AMC 20 axle. Offset diff. Dont know gears, open/ls/lock, dont know if it works.
It was in an early 80s cheroke. Now its on my trailer in the way. "Good for a paperweight if you have very large papers that need to be dirty" Or good for a mockup project, or spare parts, or rebuilding, or a coffee table. ![]()

Please be more specific about what it came out of. The full-size SJ Cherokee was produced until 1983 and the XJ was produced from 84-up.
Which vehicle was it and what drivetrain was in it? The reason I ask is that SJ C20's had factory 1-piece shafts w/big tubes and the XJ C20 would be a metric-ton option (I think).

Let me get a bit more serious.
I pulled this rear axle and the matching front off of an upside down jeep at the junkyard. It was an 80-83 cherokee with a 6cyl. I cant tell you much on the rest of the drivetrain options as I wasnt paying attention. The axle has 6 lugs, drums are still on it, and its pretty rusty. Last time I looked this up, I thought I remembered this being an AMC 20. I'm looking through my 4x4 guide here, and its listing a D44. I'll look at it closer tommorrow and verify what it is. In the meantime, Ive attached a picture of it. I figured someone might be interested for spare shafts at least.

If it has 6 lugs, its certainly a full-size axle. However, I can't find anything on IFSJA that denotes an offset-rear transfer-case being used after 1979. I looked at the exploded diagrams of all the FSJ cases from 80-up (208, 219, 228, 229) and they are all centered. How did you determine that its from an 80-83 FSJ Cherokee?
I'm also rusty on IDing the front undersides of axles. :tonka: Is the diff cover perfectly round? If it isn't, its not a C20. I'd also like to know what yard you found this 6-cyl FSJ in, if you don't mind. You can PM it to me if its top-secret.

Im not claiming to know anything about jeeps, so I'll start with that. This came from my buddy's yard near Clio. I grabbed the set of axles for my offroader project. When I started working things out, the relatively small size and offset diff on this one (I'm sure on the offset part) encouraged me to find something different for my rear end. I threw that pic up because its one that I had sitting on my computer. I'll shoot one of the cover tonight, and see if I can match it with my diff cover references here. Dont get too excited about that yard either. This was the only fullsize jeep there, and it's flat out trashed.

Okay, so you got the front one already and are keeping it, then?

Zook already told me he's coming down after it. Just so you know Zook, I checked, and it is a D44. So I suppose thats good news for you. Its right side up in that picture too... setup for spring over.
