Homemade Driveshaft Balancing Q's... JCR guys?

I'm building a new driveshaft next week, and I know the guys at JCR have built some. On old MJ posts, Monkeyevil mentioned a method for balancing without weights, but didn't mention said method..

care to share with me? Sand in the tube, or something else?

Thanks!

Jason I built mine for the both "B"'s and they went well. I just had them trued in to "+,-" .002 out of round. I never had a vibe from the shaft itself. If you need to balance more. Then you could move a worm clamp around to see if it gets better or worse.

if you have a steel shaft drill and tap a hole in the shaft and pour half a gallon or so of antifreeze in the shaft and then put a pipe plug in. i guess you could do the same with an aluminum shaft if you welded a nut or somethin.

1st off any thing put in the inside the shaft is going to cause more problems then it solves . Centrifugal force will bit your butt at relativly low speeds .

I have built shafts for the ZJ and shakers Blazer . nevether has any vibrations at road speed .

Make sure your u joints are timed when you put it together . Ujoints must run together not a 1/4 turn out of sink . That is the number 2 thing i seen cause vibrations on a shaft .

U joints have a hormonic , they need to cancel each other out . note how the yolks are placed in relation to each other before seperating the shaft .

Yup know that.. will use an angle finder to put them in correct phase.

What have you used for tubing? DOM? HREW? Pipe?

Front is goin gto be a square driveline, but Ineed to shorten the rear 4", and the existing tube can't just be cut and rewelded. Need to returb the whole thing..

i tack em as straight as I can and mount them in the vehicle.

With a peice of chalk and a steady hand, barely touch the chaulk to the shaft (at each end) and have someone spin a tire. Where you see a chalk line is an out of round spot. Hit it with a hammer there and run the chalk line again.

Your looking for a full band of claulk around the shaft with no movement in your hand. That means the shaft is true at that end.

Do the same for the other side.

Now your 95% sure your in round.

i always added about .25 cup of ATF to the tube and welded the hole back over. Not enough to create serious cent force. If .25 cup isn't enough, you have more issues than ATF will fix

are you using toytoa d-shafts? If so, I can give you the DOM size you need for a press fit, or if you can't find it cheap enough, we can order you some....

Yes, building a rear toyota shaft. I haven't measured it yet, looks like around 2.5" or so..
