I do my best at it. It is extremely difficult to do the auction chant at a fast speed. Unfortunately that is what 98% of people think of when they hear the term auctioneer. Bid calling is only about 10% of what makes a successful auctioneer. The key to being effective is to make sure that the bidders can understand what you are saying. If they can't understand what bid you are asking for, they won't bid. Some of the best auctioneers use a very slow chant. Livestock and auto auctioneers need to have an extremely fast chant. But, those buyers are just as professional as the auctioneer and are trained to understand them. But, for a majority of the auctioneering I do, a nice steady chant is all that is needed, emphasizing the numbers. For a charity benefit auction, you almost don't even use the chant. Probably 75% of the people there have never been to an auction other than at a charity event. If I went into a farm auction style of chant, I would be standing there with a lot of eyes looking at me, with nobody bidding. It would be very much like a fine art auction at Sotheby's or Christie's in NYC. Very English and formal. Sip the tea, and flip up the pinky. I prefer the antique and farm sales though... But, you make as much selling one expensive painting in 15 minutes as you do in an 8 hour farm sale sometimes...
