where to get steel in livonia/plymouth area

well i went to united steel or some place forgot the name, they raped me up the ass for the price but at the time i didnt know better but thought it was a bit high. I questioned them but they said its what they charge everonye. so im looking for a place that does not mind sellings short segments of steel and doesnt raped the fricken custmor. I could order through my work but i barley work there and itd be sort of a bitch.

I buy my stuff at Pontiac Steel, in Pontiac. They seem ok on prices, but I've never shopped around.. most stuff is around 50c a pound.

angle, tube, and more but usually just short cuts since im just working on building sliders, skid plates, welding table. Never have a ton of money on me at one time so i really cant buy in bulk.

those are both in livonia and i go through them all the time, good prices and good custermer service

contractor said they wont sell to me because of the low quanity i want to buy. I can order through them through my work but im hardly working there anymore so itd be a pain. I went to metal supermarkert on Anhiem just down the street from contractor steel. also where is smeedes and sons?

another idea if u only need a small quanity, is go to the scrap yard (haggerty metal) and see if they will sell u some

do they do new steel too or just scraps? im gonna go there soon too but sometimes i just dont feal like cleaning old steel up to weldable

I'm surprised they don't have small racks of scraps there. Stuff from maybe 18" to 8 ft long...

Where I go, they will sell me stuff by the foot, its more expensive that way, but not unreasonable.

Whenever I'm busing something like, say, 1.5" square tube, 1-1/4" sch 40 pipe, flat stock, I usually buy a full length and have them cut it into smaller sections. I've finally built up a decent stock of metal at home, its nice when you are fabbing something and you need a small piece.

contractor steel sent me to metal supermarkets, just down the road from them on Arnheim. They had what I needed and were about 20% than smede and son, who had to order what I wanted. I'll be going back to metal supermarkets late next week for more materials. They specialize in people that only want a few pieces at a time, and not full 20' sticks of tube.

I've used Smede & Sons on INkster between Plymouth Rd and Schoolcraft. Sometimes you can get lucky at the metal recycler on Schoolcraft east of Haggerty.

I called Smede and Son, they were going to have to order the metal (1.5 square tube, 1/4 wall). I called metal supermarkets and they had it in stock, Total there was $58, smede and son told me $76.

its just scrap...but suprisingly you can find some stock that is in really good condition

How much 1.5" did you get for $58?

I just recently bought a 6 ft piece of 2 x 2 x 0.250" from Pontiac Steel, it was $18.

Off the short rack, the HREW is like 50c a pound.

I also bought a 24 ft stick of 1.5" x 1.5" x 0.125" I think it was about $25. I can't find the itemized receipt for that trip.


I know I called some other places recently for some specialty DOM and got quotes up to $25 a foot.

Bones, Metal Supermarket are they guys who screwed me over. Im gonna get a quote from them online to make sure its the same as they charged me. Id like to continue to go to metal supermarket because its 3miles from my house but dont really like getting screwed over.

If nothing else, call a few places for references.

Oh, if you are getting something cut, but not to an exact finish length, go for flame cuts, as saw cuts are more expensive at most places.

The last time I bought steel it came from: Metal Mart U.S.A, Dequinder rd in Warren. (586)977-5820. They don't have any requirements on how much or how little you buy. They have a big drop section for all the short pieces. I don't know if there prices are good or not, you tell me... 4"x2" x 11GA rect steel tubing @ 40" length was $26.90. And 1/8" x 11" x 48" steel diamond plate was $5.10/SQFT = $18.70
