1987 4runner 31inch tires = bad gas milelage?

I have a 1987 4Runner with the 22RE 4 cylinder engine lifted 2 inches with 31 inch tires. My problem is I get about 13-14 combined mpg. Is this normal? It just seems like it should get a little better. It also has 214,000 miles. Thanks

it should be more like high teens to ~20, would be my guess. Maybe a couple less if you have an auto, which does seem to sap power from the 22RE

At 200k+ miles, its probably just tired. Besides loss of compression due to valve and ring wear, you could have a host of other things hurting power:

valvetrain out of adjustment
camshaft wear
clogged exhaust
gunk buildup in the intake
poor ignition wiring/grounding
bad oxygen sensor
worn ignition components
clogged fuel injectors.

I'd look at www.4crawler.com and look at what he did to do tune ups. Thats about as far as I'd go on a 200k mile motor. You could probably get a couple MPG back through routine maintenance.

Well, some stuff is free.

Clean the throttle body.
Adjust the valves
check the plugs and gap them right

other stuff is cheap
cap and rotor
fuel filter
air filter

etc

i have a 22r truck with 31's and gets horriable gas mileage and has under 100k on block and like 70k on head and it still sucks gas down. Its carbed but still i get like 13-15ish and those are diff not a highway truck. anything over 60 just sucks gas twice as bad.

the Auto thing is a myth, my 89 4runner with 22re auto with 31" tire got 19-20 mpg pretty consistently.

my 22re had a RV cam and a header as well.

My '91 4Runner with "31 BFG ATs/22RE/5 speed got right around 18-21. My '89 XtraCab on "31s got much better mileage.

I would try a tune-up and a K&N.

Both my 4runner and truck got high teens with 32's.
