Fairleads: Are they necessary?

I've seen people run without them if the opening was wide enough and you dont have to worry bout the line rubbing on anything. I was thinkin bout running a synth. rope with my winch and just running it wide open. Is this a bad idea or do i HAVE to get a hawse or roller fairlead? Thanks.

I have pulled with many kinds of winchs over the years, but almost none had an open face to them, only two that I ever remember we had that were both on the rear of Fat albert and were used as hold over lines, they were both 20,000lbers with 5/8" cable and they got mangled regularly, the biggest problem is running againest the edge of the spool, its like a buzz saw on the cable if it pulled had againest a moving object like that.

So If I Purchase a new roller fairlead for my synthethetic rope I should be fine. The reason I am getting a rollerfairlead with a synthetic rope is because i have an ARB Bullbar and it wont work right with a hawse fairlead. Make sense?

As long as you get one of those setups with the plastic rollers, it should be ok.

Wont it be fine with the metal rollers if they new and smooth?

The problem using a roller with synthetic rope is that the rope can jam in the corners in between the rollers. Just get an aluminum hawse fairlead off ebay for $50.

I guess I have to agree with brimy, I to was concerned about the rope deforming in the corners of a roller type. the solid alluminum ones that look like an anchor chain slot is the one to use

I dont think an ARB Bumper will work with a hawse fairlead? i mean i could modify it if i needed to. i rather just get the plastic rollers i dont think i would really worry bout it gettin caught in the corners. never really had a problem with the steel line goin near the corners.

Do I wanna go with the 13,700 lb. Breaking Strength (5/16") or 19,600 lb. Breaking Strength (3/8")? I have a TJ if it makes a difference?
