which one would you lock?

currently I have limited slip in the front(true trak ) and detriot truetrack in the rear. I am going to buy one locker now, hehe just cause I am poor so should I lock the front or rear? I was thinking rear and put the detriot true track on the front.

This has been argued whether locking just the front or just the rear works best. I say lock the rear, but locking the front will probably give you better traction for hill climbing and such.

Why not just save the $$$ and do both at the same time? IMO I'd lock the rear and leave the front alone (then sell the truetrack for $ for another locker), you'll save time and money by not having to set-up one axle twice if you don't switch the two around.

A Trutrac is a Tractech limited slip differential. Why would you need to move the rear to the front if you already have one there?

You don't drive it around, so lock the front and Lincoln the rear.

Yes, lock the front with a lunchbox locker, weld the rear, sell your limited slips, might not even cost anything after selling parts.

Your driving characteristics with the spool aren't going to be worst than with a rear locker, and tire wear won't be much different. A locker is locked when you are on the gas anyway, so most turns you aren't costing, you are hitting the gas to move, so you are locked around curves usually anyway.

OK this might sound stupid, but wouldn't it be a PITA to Lincoln lock a Detroit Truetrac? Pull it out, crack open the carrier, weld it together, bolt it back together, and reinstall it (plus you messing up a perfectly good Truetac). Or buy a used open carrier, weld it, set it all up and install it.

IMO Lock the rear now and sell the Truetrac for $$$$ towards a front locker. When you get more cash then lock the front. Seems like it would be cheaper, easier to just set-up the axle once and be done with it. Verses have to do it a couple of times.

locking the rear is better on hills due to the weight transfer to the rear.

note that this does not include pulling yourself over ledges. then the weight, and traction up front helps get the front over, and then pull the back over.

there's alot more that goes into it( Weight distribution, antisquat, weight transfer, etc.) but in general, locking the rear will have more benefit in more situations in a swb jeep.

I have had 2 CJ's

one was welded in the rear only and one was locked in the front only

Before I got the rear end of the CJ welded that had the front locker in it, I like it alot better then just having the rear welded

so what I'm saying is that I liked having just the front locked as opposed to having just the rear locked.

After I finally welded the rear of the CJ with the locker in the front though, it was a whole new world.

This is the only right statement of all the above and I have been there and done that so I have proof just like just stated.

After putting the locker in the front of my truck i started breaking axle joint like made eventually leading to the entire knuckle breaking off. I think lockers engage and disengage to harshly for the front and would lock the rear and get the tightest limited slip i could for the front asit would be much softer engaging on a wheel that might be cranked all the way to one side under power.

Cube....for rocks.....lock both or for everything else I think locked rear/tight limited slip front will get you just as deep into the muck before you have to winch yourself out anyway. :gman:

I have a TruTrac in the front, and as long as you have both front wheels in contact with the ground it's virtually as good as a locker, with few of the downsides. The TruTrac is a gear-driven LSD, unlike the clutch pack LSD in the Dana TracLoc.

It's a better-behaved alternative to locking the front and prevents losing turning radius. As my mechanic said "unless you're rock-crawling in Moab" the Tru-Trac front/Detroit Locker rear will do virtually everything in the midwest.

It's gotten me through stuff Rubis and other locked vehicles couldn't.

And I get some of the "cool, chick-attracting locker sound" when making tight turns on dry pavement. :tonka:

With a trail rig I would weld a open carrier for the rear and get a lunch box locker for the front. People most likely have some open diffs just laying around you could get for next to nothing. sell your diffs to buy the front locker.
