Question More power little truck, Engine swap???

Ok so I must have messed up something during my 22re rebuild, it just died last week. Im afraid its bad and would like to get more power anyways. So Im thinking of running a chevy 350 because of how cheap they are. Looked into a 4.3 but it just seems i might as well do the 350 if im going to spend the money.

One of my big things though is i want a manual still and know the stock 5 speed isn't going to take a V8 for long. What tranny should i be looking for, i'd prefere a 5 speed. It just seems almost every chevy 4x4 has an auto, I'd Like to just find a beater and swap it all over.

Or a ford 302

Jeep 4.0

Toyota inline 6.

Depends on what trans you want.

Automatic, go with a Chevy 4.3.

Stick, go with a 3RZ from a Tacoma.

The Supra motor is garbage. A 302 isn't a bad motor if you want V8 power, I'd still go chevy first.

A 302 is barely more power than a Vortec 4.3.

Fuel injected 4.3s, small blocks, and 302s would all be cheaper motors to find than a decent 7mge, especially in mid michigan.

for the effort of a 7mge you could do a 3rz and endup with less weight and same HP.

now a 7mgte is a different case, 290hp on a dependable turbo motor. and yes dependable and turbo motor do no tbelong in the same sentence.

the 22RE with an RV cam and ported head will put out around 140HP. a rebuild would be the cheapest.

Yota axles do not like the V8's and the added weight of one is huge in a light weight truck like a Yota.

The 22re is ported and polished, pro comp cam, header and all gasket matched. Was pretty quick. I just don't feel like rebuilding the bottom end again.

If i do what do you think bumping the compression up to 10:1 and putting bigger valves in would add?

3rz's started in 88 right? And isn't there something you should check for in relation to the heads?

If you are still planning on turning it into a prerunner you dont what a v8 because of the weight. The horse power is full and all but not partical for a prerunner. If you really what to do a motor swap in the 88 put a supra motor in it. You can build tons of power with them. With that plan you would be best off buying a old beat supra with a descent engine and going from them. Then you know you have all the parts and after you can part it out and scarp it. I think your best route would be to build the 22re more and get a turbo kit for that and put some low gears in it. My cousins 2wd prerunner has 4.88s with only 30's with a cam and header and it is really fast. The 85-88 5 speed will take the power off a v8(mild v8 not driven recklessly). If you decide to go the v8 way get back to me and i can tell you were to get parts for it the cheapest since i am putting a built 350 in my 85.

You could also look into doing a 20r head swap. Dont know much about it but Ive heard it makes alot more power. kinda hard to find details on though. Head swap+turbo+cam+header+porting= alot power out of a 22re

IN MY LITTLE BLACK BEAST I HAD A OLD STOCK 22RE. THAT HAD JUST SUCKED UP TO MUCH MUD OVER THE LAST 3 YEARS. GREG ( MY MOTOR MAN ) SAID THAT HE WOULD BE SURPRISED IF IT WAS KICKING OUT 65 HORSE WHEN I HAD HIM BUILD ME A HIGH COMPRESSION MOTOR. IT IS PORTED, POLISHED, 30 OVER DOME TOP PISTONS WITH 20 OFF THE DECK, CRANK, CAM AND MAFS TO ACCOMMODATE I LOVE IT I NEVER HAD IT ON THE DINO BUT GREG SAID IT WOULD BE SOME WHERE AROUND 135 HP TO 140 HP ONCE AGAIN "I LOVE IT " THE TRUCK IS DOWN RIGHT NOW DO TO I TWISTED THE REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUT OF IT AGAIN

Or for less you can have a 2RZ or 3RZ that makes more power stock(and way more torque) and responds great to mods.

Toyota driveshafts are made out of pepsi cans. There's no excuse running a stock driveshaft on any trail rig. 2-1/2" sch 40 is your friend, almost a perfect fit on the yokes.

Myself, I see no reason to stay toyota unless you want 4 cyl power, in which case the 3RZ is nice. 22REs are always said to be bombproof, btu around here, as old as they are, seem to always run like garbage, and break. I killed one last year(wrist pin) and my 22RE has taken lots of tuning to get rid of misfires and still isn't quite right.

Pretty much all other toyota motors have quality that last the big GM truck motors.

I thought about a 3RZ, but they are taller than a 22RE, I don't know if it would fit in my Jeep.. I need to find a new Vortec 2900 4 cyl... 2.9 liter 4 cyl, 185 hp, 190 ft-lbs, and I think bolts to the old 90* small block pattern.

I PAYED $1,400 AND I COULD USE ALL MY STOCK GOODIES ( POWER STEERING PUMP, BRACKETS, ALTERNATOR, MOTOR MOUNTS, RADIATOR, HEADER "THAT I HAD" , COUMPUTER THERE WAS NO PROBLEMS WITH WIRING. ) IT NEVER WILL BE A MONSTER BUT IT IS FUN

again, for $1400, you can get a 3RZ installed there.

I rarely see stock engines fail no the trail. I see modified engines fail all the time off road, or at less run finicky, overheat, etc.

no quality like OEM quality.

Damn, now I'm thinking of going to find a Vortec 2.8 or 2.9, and ditch my TBI 4.3. Aluminum block 4 cyl, should be ~75 lbs lighter than the iron block V6.

Meh, the intake manifold wouldn't work with my hood design.

Yea my 22re was very finicky, but when she ran it was a dream.

the 3rz is looking good, but im still curious about the 7meg

And well maybe the 4.3 still, only if i can get the early 90's vortech.
What would be really cool is a turbo 3.8 or 4.3

The early 90s vortec was the CPI that had the crappy fuel pressure regulator. The later MPFIs were better. Or just get a TBI for like $200 complete.

The cpi's made some good numbers though, plus they had the aluminum intake

I would just stick with a mild 22re. Roadhouse can tell you that my wristpin slap in my old XtraCab got sooo loud but it never let go. I ran 31 x 11.5 Yokohama Muddiggers(terrible in sand, awesome in mud). It wouldn't shift the Earth off it's access but it wasn't bad. I never really did much to it other than a K&N. It really could have used some top end though. One of the guys we used to wheel with ran a 22RET in his 87 or 88 XtraCab. Right where mine fell off his turbo started working.

I have ridden in a 4.3 swap in a 85 4Runner too. It had enough power. I think the only thing I would have done different is stick with the Toy t-case. He used a noisey one that I don't remember what it was.

I know NWOR has a lot of Ford swap stuff.

Stick with the 22RE and gear it.
