Tow Bar - Bumper Questions/help!

I want to put a tow bar on the front of my TJ so I can flat tow it behind my motorhome. I got a tow bar (Reese Tow Champ - 5,000lbs) cheap from an old fart here in Holland, and I have a few questions if anyone can point me in the right direction.

1. Can/should I bolt the tow bar brackets directly to my stock bumper?

2. Do I need to buy another bumper/tow bar set-up? If so, any suggestions? (Cheap suggestions I mean)

In the end, I don't want to be driving my RV and have my TJ passing me, or seeing it in my rearview, tumbling behind me!

Any help would be appreciated.

Greg

I used that same bar on my YJ. I cut some large 3/8" plate to fit behind the bumper and it worked fine.

if thats your TJ, then i would recommend widening the mounts, ideally you want the mounts in line with the frame rails. And i don't think i'd use the stock bumper to put the mounts on

I would recommend this bumper built by Jeeperz Creeperz. This exact set up will cost you $275 and it's cheaper if you don't want the winch mount or stinger. www.jeeperz-creeperz.com

May be late to the party, but I have 3/8 angle iron full length behind my bumper. The tow bar mounts are bolted through the bumper and into the angle iron. Anlge iron is notched around the frame rails. This has provided me with 7 years of no hassle towing behind my Class A.

On the YJ I bolted directly to the bumper and towed it to Florida, Northern Ontario, all over Michigan, etc. No hassles, no problems. Better bumper.

I have no discernable flexing or distortion from towing this way. If I think about it, I should snap some pics to show the set up. See if I can get behind the bumper to see the angle iron.
