What is a good size tube for a roof rack?

I'm designing one up for a friend right now and I don't know what size to make it. Right now I'm thinking about 1.25" tubing but I'm thinking that might be too big.

What have other people used?

are you using squared or rounded tubing? 1.25 will be big, i'd probably go no bigger than .75 or so. just make sure you can get some tie down straps around the tube, or weld on some eyes for the straps to hook into.

I'm pretty sure I'll be alright in that aspect. I'm modeling it out in ProE now and making everything drawings so I know all my numbers. It looks the same right now I just have to go back through and make it .75 tube. Even when I talked about it I thought that 1" was really too big but I just wanted to make sure. .

1" or 3/4" will do you fine and not look too big or too small.

I second 3/4" that is what my kargo master is made out of and looks okay, minus the rust and being 250 miles away from the jeep
