How do ya get the damn axle shaft out?

1990 F250
TTB front suspension

I am trying to get the drivers side axle shaft out to do the u-joints. Last one I did, the axle just pulled out after I got all the outer crap out of the way.

I can not get the damn shaft out of this thing. Tried a pry bar behind the u-joint...not moving.

Any tips?

is there a zerk fitting or cap on the ujoint that won't let it slide out, or do you mean there is something liek a C-clip holding it in?

Short side should slide out. Long side is a 2 piece shaft with a slip yoke in the middle. The inner piece of the long side is C -cliped in. Sorry brain fart and dont remember what side the diff is on

Yea, I am talking about the short side. I know the long side is c-clipped in...well, the short part of the long side. :tonka:

Anyway, I am talking about the short side, the side that does not have the slip joint and the extra u-joint.

I have never had one on the short side stick in like this. If feels like there is a c-clip holding it in. We can't get the damn diff out till we get that shaft out so we can pull the other shaft so we can put all new u-joints in.

Before you tell me that you don't "really" have to pull the diff to do the middle joint, I know. That is left to those that know more about how to properly use a torch...and high school kids are not the ones to be doing this. I am teaching the high school kids the "proper" way to do it. I don't give out my money making secrets for free. :tonka: I don't even pull the axle shafts or hubs or anything to do the outer u-joints on fords like this.

Damn thing has me boggled. Guess I need a bigger pry bar.

you can pull the diff and check to see if it is c-clipped, just have a couple helps hold the damn thing back and look inside there.

The shaft runs through the tube...without pulling the shaft, we can't get the diff back far enough to look in there, let alone do anything.

It's gotta be just stuck. Damn thing.

just make them pull the pass side shafts then unbolt the diff, slide it to the pass side of the vehicle and the shaft will slide through teh beam....its good learning experiance

But yea its got to be stuck

I dunno of the u-joint will fit....I know the round seal thing won't. That's next on the list if we can't get it out of there.

so basically you have this....

what round seal are you talkin about? the one for the spindle? that should slide off or it might be rusted on, but if you buy a spindle bearing kit (which i bet you need as mine were totally gone) it has that in there and it just slides on teh shaft.

When pulling them the normal way the only prob i ever had was getting the u-joint to fit through the knuckle hole, sometimes it was a tight fit.

No no no...I can't get this out of the short (drivers) side. I think the damn thing is broke. The axle might have stripped the splines in the side gears. This should just pull out...but it won't. Can't pry it out, can't beat it out, and can't slide hammer it out.

yea i know that, but what round seal are you talking about other than the spindle seal that is on the axle shaft?

I doubt its broke, i would say twisted splines at the most

What seal are you talking about? I made no mention of a seal. I just want the damn axle out.

The axle is not C-cliped in....I've done more than a few of these and usually the axle shaft simply pulls out. However, I have had some that are a mutha to get out....

Only suggestion I have is to pull the shit out of it.....you can try a slide hammer if you've got an attachment that allows it to fit through the knuckle and over the backside of the U joint (think the attachment that allows it to be used to pull CV joints - the one I've use was "custom" and made for the job)....or you can try a prybar with a hammer.....

On a side note, you can do the center U joint without torching it (although it is faster, but I see your point of view) without pulling the diff....you simply need a press designed for U-joints....but it is again a mutha to do it in the truck

Doah...yer right. It's the seal that isn't on there in the pic. It presses onto the stub shaft. Doesn't matter anyway because the u-joint will not fit through the axle.

I have ton tons of these but NEVER had one stick like this. Tried a prybar and hammer...did the slide hammer, air hammer...even grabbed the stub shaft and pulled and swore like a mofo. How could anything stay stuck against these guns? :tonka:

Ok, i'll get a bigger hammer.

Take the knuckle off for what? The axle comes out through the hole. The knuckle isn't stopping it.

Anyway, I know you are coming home. I have your brother in one of my classes and I had a coffee with your dad tonight..
