when you put the top end back on a transmission...

is there a special way it goes on , or is there only one way to put it on? I got my t-176 fixed and we installed it yesterday, but we can get it to work right, it seems like the shifter goes into all the gears except reverse, but it wont move. I don't know whats going on, we're going to play with it a bit, but is there anything special I should know?
