Swingout's

Given the choice between Steel and aluminum for a Swing out, what would you chose and why?

I have a ORT Bumper, a guy in our Fab shop offered to make me a carrier. Material cost is not an issue.

Titanium then, light and strong...

But I am going to try a round tube swingout for the YJ. Something different hopefully it works.

I will be doing a round tube swingout for the YJ.

I would use steel, to get the same strength with aluminum. I would think it would have to be made be big and gaudy in my opinion.

not sure how big your tire is but aluminum wouldnt be my first choice for that application just because it isnt real happy with "cycling" type loads. even the heavy wall harder stuff will fatigue - crack and fail, which can be rather dangerous in certain situations. its the same reason you dont see any trailer hitches or cages made out of aluminum -

if you want light and strong and you have free material, go 4130 high carb steel (or something in that range) then you can drop your wall thickness and it would weigh less than the aluminum version. that stuff cracks too, yea, but its a dam site tougher than the aluminum.

post a pic when ya do it

Hey Paul, if you need a jeep to have them practice on, have them try a swingout for a CJ7 with a 35" spare! That way, they will have it right when they do yours!
(see how helpful I am??)

If I had the choice you do it would be aluminum all the way. Just make sure you use an aircraft grade T3. Stay away from T6 due to it being heat treated for non cold work (not suppose to bend it). T3 is also heat treated but you can cold work it. As long as you have a compitent tig welder do it. I wish mine was 100 pounds lighter! Try to use as thick of a wall as you can. Some of my suppliers actually offer some 2024T3 with .250 wall thickness. That lets your welder burn it in deep. I would get some tubing with Alclad (anti corrosion) and use zinc chromate as a primer.

As far as strength is concerned, remember the next time your on a commercial airliner that those big ass turbines are usually held on with two to three mounts and of course are manuminum.
