I'm buying a 1970 FJ40. It needs work. Are parts hard to get? Are they gonna send me to the poor house? How about fiberglass tubs? What do they cost? Are there any places to get parts for an old FJ40? Thanks.

I am sure there are out west, but I paid a good amount of money just to get my FJ tub and Frame. I would expect to pay about $100 for a good bib, $50 for bezel, $100-125 for good aprons, $100-150 per fender, and most of the factory toyota emblems will shock you in price.

I know where there is one near me that has a good front clip,also a couple people in my club have bought tubs for around the 2500.00 mark.If you need some info I can get you in contact with them.

Pics worth a 1000 words, Stock not stock, need some more info. There are a few 40 guys on this board. More than you can shake a stick at on mud.

Body and frame of mine is a 70, then it turns into a mutt.

IMHO, if the 70 is stock, there are some cons. Like manual steering, 4 wheel drums, 1f engine which is the smaller, no roll bar, no radio, no A/C, but hey its still pretty tough.

1970s used better thicker sheet metal, but rust is always a problem.

Thanks. I'll get some pictures of it as soon as I can. It needs work. It's been axled over, has a roll cage, has 38" Hawgs on it and needs a gas tank. Other than that, it looks pretty stock. Body is fair. It's gonna be alot of work and $$$$. Five year project at least. My wife isn't exactly happy. She went through this with my Broncos.

That being said, Engine? V8? With 38s you hopefully have 4 wheel disks?? Longfields in the front. the Fj 40 uses a Birfield joint which is a weak spot. Snapping them is easy I hear with anything over 35s and a locker in the front. Messy job to change them, Lonfields are heat treated and chromos. about 600 a pair but allegedly unbreakable.

gas tank huh, best spot is the dealer, Yup, real steel and under 300 bucks. Pending the engine you have, the tanks changed, with return lines from the carb. So yah need to know that when ordering.

Spring over is the term for the cut and turn of the front axle to get proper drive line angles. any idea who did it?

Six cylinder engine. Still has the original drum brakes on all fours. The guy who owned it did the spring over himself. This thing is going to be a project. Everything that has been done on it looks like back yard work. It's rough. I've got pics on my camera phone but can't get the thing to work so I can upload them. I'll take some with my regular camera in a day or two.

Ouch, Yeah, youve maybe got some safety issues with the tire size and the drums. Plus some strength issues if the axle is still from 1970, it has a course spline birfield.
Also depending on the spring over quality it might need to be addressed. Hows the steering?

Quick fix for a lot of that is an FJ 40 axle from 1977 or later, Stronger birfs (fine spline) disk fronts.

Etc. Souns fun, I am on the tail end of 4-5 year build myself. and went through much of the same.

I have longfeilds in mine....put them through hell .They are stronger than a d-60 at full steering lock.Great upgrade,make sure you get the longs though...others are not as strong(Ive broke newfeilds with wheels strait before)

One key thing with Longfields... make sure your hubs are in good shape, or upgrade them.


On my minitruck, I'm going to install the longfield chromo hub gears as well.

If your hub breaks, it often damages the splines on the longfield. That will NOT be covered under the otherwise excellent lifetime warrantee.

I've got the 30 spline longs in my minitruck, and beat them mercilessly. Will be in tellico in 6 days from now

I got a set of fj60 axles for sale right now.I may tear em down to get em out of my way so the disk brake stuff will be for sale.Swap it over to your axle. Ryan 616 402-4279 give me a call if ya like.I also got a 70 fj40 thats a parts truck.... a real rust bucket.
