Question Shop press

I just got back from harbor fieght and was thinking about getting a small press. I would like your thoughts on what one to get. I dont need anything huge (20ton) I dont think. I just want something to make changing ujoints and stuff like that a bit easier. Would a 6 ton press work or would you go with something bigger?

Thannks,
Jeremy

Just a friendly tip when buying shop-tools.

It has been my experience to always buy the biggest/best shop tool that you can afford and/or see the most useable.

A 6 ton would work fine for pressing u-joints and such, but what happens down the road when you want to press something that requires a larger press to do so?

I know I hate buying the same thing twice.

I agree buying the biggest I can but I dont think I would ever use 20-30 ton press. I was just looking to see what others have at home. I have a friend with a 60 ton if I ever needed it. What is good for a home DIY shop? FYI Harbor Frieght has the 20ton for 179$. I just think it would be too big.

I personally have a 20 ton press at home, I haven't found out anything in my experiences that I can't do with it as of yet, but I've only had it for a year or so.

I think a 20 ton isn't as much overkill as you think..

But then again, I've witnessed hacksaw press an axle bearing with a piece of pipe and a hammer..

When I say pressed, I mean, well.. It made it about 20 miles

I love how the whole story gets left behind.

ClarkstonCracker blew the axle seal out (meaning caught it on fire) trying to get the old bearing off with a set of torches. I can't imagine why a bearing would go out. How much 80-90 did you pour in the diff THROUGH THE AXLE TUBE? 1 gallon? 2 gallons? Let your 50 dollar wheel bearing die! :bdr:

I've got the 6 ton press and it is a bit flimsy but functional. I used it to replace the U-Joints in my 91 GMC K1500. It struggled on the really rusty one. It was really cheap, tho...so I can't complain. Do what you can with what you've got (moneywise).

We have a 12ton at the shop that we have had forever and a day. I recently rebuilt most of it with box tube...

It's day is done though. 12ton was fine (and kept me out of trouble most times) but I will build a 20ton soon probably :D

You can't even post a picture...

And you expect me to believe you will post the video of me changing a c-clip axle shaft with only a pair of channelocks and vise grips on the trail?

Give me a break

Now if you said you were going to grab a tape measure and measure some carpet, I would believe that.

If you don't want a big press and only going to use for u-joints just get an arbor press. Otherwise get a 20 ton minimum if you are going to buy one.

I have a 30 and soon to be replacing with a 55 ton with air assist.

I agree, go with at least the 20..... IMHO THe smaller one's don't seem to be built quite as sturdy. I'm happy with my 20.
