First time Loading up

Ok, I put my YJ on the trailer for the first time. Was going to try it out going to the mounds tomorrow. Ran into a little bit of an issue though and would like some input. Two pics of the straps front & rear. Fronts are going through the "C" under the axle shafts. If I go straight out to the sides there is a lot of pressure on the tires so I crossed over. Rear is outside the springs and crossed over for the same reason. I will have to get some mounts that go straight out welded on, but will this work safely?

First, is it ok to cross over like this on the rear?

And the Front?

TIA!

Thats how I do it

I pesonally prefer to cross the straps like that also. It seems to keep the vehicle centered better for me.

Yes crossing is good.
I'd try to go to the frame instead of the axles.
Keeps the vehicle from bouncing on the trialer.

that will be fine, if ya want it more secure run one strap to the frame to get rid on the bounce, but the way you got it is better.

While were on the topic of securing your rig to your trailer, do any of you guys use chains with a binder? I was told by a state cop that DOT requires that this be used in conjuction with any nylon type straps. From then on I always have, not sure if it true though

Ive never used chains to secure a vehical to a trailer. and we've been doing it for quite some time with no prob from the 5.0

But i always go to the frame. Sinch it down as tight as possible so the suspension wont compress over bumps and allow a strap to fall off. Also try to postition the hooks on the straps in a way so that if it DOES compress they wont fall off. yours look like they have a "lock" to hold the hook around the object so id say you're good.

dont goto the frame if you hit a big enough bump they can and will come undone. theres a reason people sell axle loops. i always tie mine down like pictured

Thanks for all theinput. I will probably look into adding some tie down loops to the trailer just so the cross over is not so extreme, but from the input, this should be ok to go about an hour for the first tow.

the only thing that looks a little sketchy is how much of a angle the rear straps are on

That is actually my biggest concern right now. If I had some loops welded on, it could be less extreme.

Can you attach the straps to the rear of the trailer anywhere? When I was on the way to TTC a guy I was traveling found out the hardway. Why not to strap the suspension down. His truck was bouncing over some bad bumps and snapped the straps. The truck bounced to the side and the rear tire fell off the deck. This was going 70MPH.

I have always used chains and binders, but then again I did have the heavy chevy's.

I use 4 criss crossed binders, from the four tow points on my bumpers, in which I usually bind the jeep by drawing it down 3-4 inches. I use a 3' pipe to close the binders. When I go back home to the Pennsylvania mountains, I add two more 3" straps, f & r, from center of axle to center of trailer. This is for extra restraint for the angle factor. It rides like a rock back there. I got once lazy and only bound the jeep down about an inch, luckily i only went about 40 miles cause the rear binders came free an the jeep slid 6" forward and I didn't know it.

I also now ty-wrap my binders closed.

I got nothing on the back. I will have to add some tie down rings onto the rear of the trailer.

Brian and I (and most that wheel with us) run the straps crossed to the d-rings on the bumpers.

We have thousands of miles towing like this and nothing has ever moved.

YMMV with that method depending on suspension and how you actually tie down to the trailer. We are running weld-on rings in each corner of the trailer as far forward and back as possible.

Best is to do both.. Suck the suspension down so it dont bounce than run axle straps as back ups..
