700r4 problem

My dad has a 85 chevy half ton 4x4 . When he was coming home from work the 3rd and 4th gear went out of it.It only moves in 1st and second gear.Is there any quick fixes for this or did something break. The reverse has ben slipping for a few years under load, if that has anyting to do with it.A mechanic told him it could be a switch in the bottom of the trans, sound possible?

Sounds like the 3-4 clutch pack gave out. What does the fluid look like? red or burnt like motoroil? If you need it rebuilt give me a PM, I am doing a trans now that had the same issues. Burnt up 3-4, and had slipping reverse. The input drum was ate out, and the reverse drum junk from heat. The cold shrinks the seals and then give out. Especially if there are a lot of miles on it.

The pan did not have any big clumps in it. The oil was more brown than red. I pulled the trans and am looking for a good used one.Dont want to spend any big money on it getting it rebuilt because he only drives it 3 or 4 thousand miles a year and it is turning into a rustbucket.

If you want I can pull it down and fix what is wrong. There won't be any guarentee's on how long it will last. But it will atleast air check when it leaves here. Atleast it is a better guarentee then buying something you know nothing about.

I'll throw my .02 in, killer B knows what hes talking about. He rebuilt my trans, and so far I like it, he upgraded mine a little though. In this cold it shifts really firm hee hee fun in the snow.

anyway at least let him check out what is wrong and pressure check it. My original trans was a JY trans and it only lasted 2 years, just under actually. that was 250 i could have put to my rebuilt one.
