Rockport, Mi

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 6, 2006

Contact: Vicki Anthes 517-335-7890 or Richard Morscheck 517-373-9265

Public Input Sought on Rockport Property

The Citizens Committee for Michigan State Parks and the Department of Natural
Resources will host an informational meeting Sept.19 at the Thunder Bay National Marine
Sanctuary in Alpena regarding future management of a 4,300-acre parcel of state forest
land in Presque Isle and Alpena counties known as Rockport. The meeting begins at
5:30 p.m. and will be held in the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center Theatre, 500
West Fletcher, in Alpena.

The Rockport property, located on Lake Huron and formerly owned by Consumers Energy,
was deeded to the state of Michigan in 1997. The property features a limestone
karst, sinkholes, historic and archaeological sites and an old quarry.

The citizens committee is an advisory committee created by legislation that Governor
Jennifer Granholm signed into law in 2004 and is charged with ensuring the public
has a voice in the planning, development and operations of Michigan’s state park
system.

For more information regarding this meeting, contact Vicki Anthes, planning section
manager in DNR’s Parks and Recreation Division, at (517) 335-7890 or
anthesv@michigan.gov. Individuals attending the meeting are requested to refrain
from using heavily scented personal care products in order to enhance accessibility for
everyone. Persons with disabilities needing accommodations should contact Dan Lord
at (517) 335-2003 a minimum of five business days before the meeting. Requests made
less than five days before the event may not be accommodated.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment
of the state’s natural resources for current and future generations.

So I guess you have to go to the meeting to have your voice heard? Can't we write letters or make phone calls?
