D60 or 70?
![]() ![]() http://mav.wastegate.net/tech/dana60-70.html looks like a d70 according to that website... it was sold to me as a d60? maybe im just retarded and there are some d60s that have d70 housings!? tell me what you think and the ring gear says 70 dana... maybe that has no correlation though. i ran the #'s off the ring gear and nothing came up... i need the #s from the housing, but its really hard to get to right now

when I was shopping for axles, I looked into a dana 70.. The only difference is the ring gear is bigger then the dana 60. I think it was less then an inch of difference.
Hopeflly you have the dana 70HD... There are 70's with smaller junk in them, I don't remember their code.

Thats not true. Basicly everything on the 70 is bigger, axle tube size, axle tube thickness, axle shaft size, and along with ring gear. The only differance between most of the Dana 70s is the housing shape and strength. There are some that have differences in the carrier that can make getting lockers for them harder I believe. Does it have shafts? what spline are they? |

Does't the number on the lower right hand webbing say 60??? Thats about as obvious as it gets. I don't see anything that makes me think its a 70. The number on the ring gear means nothing. That number is the manufacture date I believeLast edited by DetR6oit; September 4th, 2006 at 01:42 PM. |

it says 80. and the left side of the pig, top and bottom both show (according to those pics) its a 70, but the right side shows its a 60? ahhh who cares, looking at the brakes makes me think its a 60 too ... bummer

Looks like a 70... but just get a ruler and measure the ring gear.
Some people don't know the difference, since they take the same cover...

Here is a 70
Look at the extra beef in the housing (sorry, Billavista has the picture of it upside down) ![]() D70s were much more common in duallies than SRW applications. Here is a better one- look at the location of the pinion. (Again, upside down- I would rehost and flip these pix, but because I am on dial up, you wouldn't get this post 'till next week some time) ![]() Yours ![]() (I just stole you picture and flipped and rehosted it because it was easier) Also, check where the extra casting material extends past the cover. (upside down, and already partially shaved) Also see how much less room there is between the lower (now upper) bolt holes and the inside of the housing. ![]() They commonly have lots of beef in the center section. ![]() Last edited by Cooter; September 4th, 2006 at 10:10 PM. |

![]() D60 left, D70 right. Note the extra webbing on the driver's side (big rib like a HP front has) and significantly different contours all around the top half of the case compared to the D60. Notice also the obvious overall difference in case depth and tube diameter. The centersection/axle model number will be the one on the passenger lower web, which you said was 60. Quote:

It is a 60... NO 70's came with 30 spline axles... There are many versions of the 70. The pinions are offset differently between application. Like mentioned above some are harder to find lockers for then the others due to carrier design. The most common is the dana 70 "U". There is also a dana 70 that only comes in a 3.73 and that is it no other gear will fit in it.
