93 K-5 rear brakes
I did a search and it had some decent info altough, the last post was in 01. So I hope I can get a little more on the rear brakes other then they SUCK!!!. Thanks

93 K-5 Blazer, new brakes all around with ABS front. I put new rotors and drums on instead of turning them. The pedal is normal and the fronts work very well. I have great brakes going in reverse, but very little rear brakes when applied going forward. I hear this is a common problem, but it is my wifes rig and my 2 boy's ride in it daily. I have tried different brake brands, and as of now I have wagner "quiets" on there now. It has a new MC and has been pressure bleed.

did you do the special bleed procedure for the ABS? doubt that would make it stop in reverse but not forward, that kinda sounds like you got somethin backwards in there.

we talked a bit last night in chat, I think he said it started after a "Panic stop", so there has to damage somewhere. I beleive he will find a bad flex hose. given the work I do I have to build custom brake systems and I blow them on ocasion.

Does it have ABS? If so, I had the ABS module go bad (under the hood by the MC), and I had breaks, but they were real soft, I could stop but not very good. And it happened after a panic stop.

ABS sucks.... nuff said. Glad none of my vehicles have it.

theres nothing in a kelsey hays module that could release presure without activating the module. the fact they are stopping wierd is the issue. if its normal operation they should be working fine as the normal system operates around the module till its activated

Well, my ABS broke and was leaking fluid (not externally) around something causing terrible breaking. :dunno:

he has to have somethign reversed in the rear drums,or broke a return spring. abs would have nothign to do with it not stoping going forward and stoping in reverse.

Yep you all are right, I have checked and done the above. Like I said before the shoes are on right, new springs, new drums, new shoes, new pads. I have yet to check the flex hose , but when talking with yetti I mentioned that was last to check. The truck needed brakes anyway. As far as the brakes, the ABS works. Didn't say anything about anybody here not being able to help. Let's see membership here 449 at pirate 57,513+ a lot more info so I thought.

Anyways, I guess I forgot to wear my "S" on my chest today. I forgot I am not "ASE" certified. Therefore I must not know what I am talking about.

Oh and Yetti why is this such a big concern to you... Since you know brakes, then you will know that the shoes are the same size... Upon further investigation I have found a sticky proportioning valve. I will try to clean it better by flushing it more rather then removing it. I guess I stuck the valve under the panic stop.

Hmm, been thinking about this all day.

It does *seem* like its a geometry issue. Drum brakes are self energizing, and should be, in the forward direction. Sounds like they are reversed somehow and now energizing in the reverse direction.

Thinking about the lines, if there was an issue with lines, or the prop valve, I'd expect it to manifest in either forward or reverse direction, so I'm thinking something inside the drum.

Adjustments are good so the shoes are getting contact across the entire shoe face, not just at the top?

Having no experience with chevy brakes, I trust you that they are the same size. Maybe try swapping them front to back anyway, just to eliminate any other variations in pivot points or spring locations, or something wierd?

Or even go so far to swap all the right side stuff to the left and vice versa..


I searched 480 responses on pirate and a bunch on google (really slow at work today) and didn't find anything similar.

I have had 3 different brands on there, I doubt switching from side to side will do anything. The shoes ARE the same size it doesn't matter. ALL 4 in a box are the same. Same thickness, same length, same width.With playing with it some more I found out why they worked better in reverse. The E-brake was applied a few clicks. Now it stops the same forward or backwards.
