Lifting for now
Just wondering if anyone out there has thrown an IFS lift on there toyota 4x4. I picked up a used trail master lift and was going to put it on until i can afford a total chaos system or have the time and money to fab up my own.
Just wondering how much time it should take to install it and how easy it is.... looks simple. Im going to do it now while i have the engine out. And the other part is im having trouble getting instructions for it. So i might just go for it with out. Any comments would be great. Also keep a look out for a thread on rebuilding a 22re. Going to rebuild, maybe bore over to add to the new had and cam it got before a rod bearing went out on it. |

Solid axle is the way to go. Sell the IFS lift to finance part of the project.
I have a spare axle, too, but I want to keep it for spare parts. Here is my low-buck suspension. Very flexible, pretty common setup for people to run, rear springs up front, chevy springs out back. Front suspension: Springs: Rear 1983 springs with (2) overload leaves removed. Added in the top 3 leaves from a set of 1985 rears, cut to length. ($5 for new center pins) Shackles: 5.5" long, from 2"x3/8" bar stock. Grade-8 3/4" bolts with nylock nuts. ($20 in materials) Shocks: F250 shock mounts ($25 for the pair from the local ford dealer), Gabriel Gas riders for a F150 rear with 4" lift. (13" travel $29 shipped for the pair, brand new from fruit-ridge automotive on ebay) Rear: Springs: 1997 chevy 1/2 ton 2wd truck springs(3 leaf + overload), overload trimmed into a 6" long block. ($60 from local junkyard) Shackles & mounts: Mounts made from 3.5x3.5x5/16" box channel ($6), shackles 7" eye to eye made from 2" x 3/8" bar stock, 3/4" and 9/16" grade-8 bolts ($20) Shocks: Gabriel gas riders for a ford bronco front with 4" lift (13 inch travel, $29 shipped for the pair), I use the original front bayonnet shock mounts welded to the rear crossmember. Brake lines: Marlin Crawler 26" lines. ($80). You could go a little cheaper and run double rear lines + 300ZX lines up front for about $50-60... $274 for the complete lift. You'll need some u-bolts & plates for the front, thats pretty easy. You'll also need a new front spring hanger, can be made for maybe $20 if you have tools and a welder. Really should run crossover steering with a solid axle. You already have the correct steering box. Hi steer from Marlin is around $350, its a great deal. You'd want some 1.5" spacers for the front(or get the kit to run the IFS hubs on your solid axle) to match the width of the rear axle. Your front calipers will work good using some FJ-40 land cruiser rotors for better front brakes. If you don't have the money to do it all, I'd just run the IFS lift and start gathering parts, then do the solid axle swap when you have everything to do it right. This is my truck, an 83 chassis, 85 body... ![]()

Truck looks pretty tight good ideas. I even have the gm springs already. I htin ki am going to run the lift for now because of money and all... Th eengine alone is going to eat most of that up... I am modify my ball joint though like downey does... Hopefully i can pick up that extr 3 inches of travel. Im also hesitant on doing the sas becuase i have a Xj that i will strat work on once the warranty is up. And in the long run the yota is getting a full Total chaos suspension set up, coilovers and deaver springs.
Just need to get it going again so i don't beat up the xj, it is my dd |

I have the Trailcrapper lift on my truck. Don't even waste your time installing it. My truck is being SAS'd by JCR starting next week, time for a real front suspension!! That rear crossmember they give you is a cheap piece of crap, I dented mine up into the diff. Also broke one of the lift brackets, sheared it right in half (was barely able to limp it off the trail), and I broke a torsion bar mount on my last Badlands trip. Enough of that!!
