Biodiesel finally in Wayne County

From Detroit News

Atlas Oil, one of the largest petroleum distributors in the Midwest, has opened the first biodiesel fueling station in Wayne County, and plans to open another next week in Oakland County.

The additions will bring to 34 the number of stations where environmentally conscious drivers of diesel cars and trucks can find a blend of regular diesel and biodiesel fuel in Michigan, according to the National Biodiesel Board, the trade association representing the biodiesel industry.

Taylor-based Atlas Oil is offering B5, consisting of 5 percent biodiesel and 95 percent diesel. The fuel is made from renewable sources such as soybeans, and proponents say its use is another way to help the environment and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil.

"It's one solution," said Mike Evans, executive vice president of business development.

The biodiesel at the Taylor station on Ecorse Road is priced comparably to regular diesel (at $3.06 per gallon Tuesday), even though it costs a little more to make, Evans said.
