Synthetic winch rope... Opinions please..

What are you guys running? Are you happy with it, or should I stick with cable?

Curious as well. I'd like to switch over, wanted to know about durability for those who've had it for a while..

I have used rope for several years now, I would never run cable again.

I've had rope for probably a 1.5 years or so. Mine is amsteel blue from Scott at rockstomper.com

I've notice that it will pinch easier than standard winch wire/rope/whatever the official name is, but with minimal maintenence, it's not really a problem. (like rewrapping it rather than leaving it in a big clump after a pull)

you will need a hawse fairlead. One that has not be used with steel cable. You can get aluminum ones on ebay for about $30 shipped.

Synth is the way to go for safety IMO. Yes it does wear faster than cable can if not taken care of, but you can mend synth in the field. You can't do that with cable I believe. The reason for a new hawse fairlead is you need one without burrs that can cut the rope.

There are also plastic rollers available to setup a roller fairlead to work with rope....

I just can't get over the cost, though... for 100 ft of the basic 3/8" line, its $200 even, plus $35 for the fairlead..

I have a brand new winch, so I'll wait until the cable goes bad before I buy that..

x2 on that and also x2 on the you can ment it super easy in the field. We did it at GG this year. I didn't know that you wern't sposed to get the same diameter as the wire you take off so I was undersized for the rope. Pulling hard, slipped off a large bolder and shocked the line into breaking. It just coiled up in front of the jeep...didn't go anywhere. Didn't hit the Jeep, no one was hurt, Jim fixed it that night in about 10 min.

You can buy a bulk roll of the line and make them yourself. Maybe i'll look into doing that.

hagger are you surpised by the price? The price for rope has come down alot. If not 50% decrease since it orginally came out. If it was $300 for that 3/8x100', I would still go to rope. Cable=the suck.

FWIW, I bought X-line rope for $150 a couple years ago now and I'm sure it's come down a bit since.

I'm not surpised, I just can't afford that at the moment. Not when I paid $400 for a brand new 12,000lb milemarker.

When the cable wears out, sure, but for $240, I'm not going to toss a brand new cable in the trash.

Would love to have the rope, don't get me wrong. I've worked with both and rope is certainly nice.
