New F-150 and a problem

Well, after almost being a yota truck owner I have come back to the tried and true F-150 that I know and love. I just bought this 4x4, 4.9L with auto trans beauty :



Unfortunately, I am also back with the same old F-150 problem of the rusty oil pan and totally defective oil pan gasket. I am going to try and do this one myself and was wondering if anyone had any advice for me before I started. Or maybe some westside wheelers who might be willing to lend a hand?

OMG...well...the only advice I have is not to have little ones around when you do it because there will be alot of cussing.

Have you ever done an oil pan on a F or E series ford?

No. I have done a lot of research on it because I had a 92 XLT 2 wheel drive b4 that had a similar problem, but I sold the truck without fixing it.

I crawled under mine breifly tonight, and honestly I am not sure what all the fuss is about. Looks like mine should just slide right out.

they aren't too bad, if you know some of the tricks. unbolting the motor mounts and the fan shroud (if equipped) and jacking the engine u p as far as you can before binding it at the top helps a lot. also, once the oil pan is loose, get your hands inside the pan and unbolt the pickup tube. after that, a little motivation and it should pop right out.

Oh Yah, don't forget to drain the oil first.

you bought a truck that is atleast 11 years old and expected ford would have fixed it? I don't get it.

Well it's doesn't just slide out for sure. Unbolting the mounts and jacking the motor up isn't really a trick...it can't be done without doing that. You have to get your hand in there and unbolt the oil pump and drop it into the pan to get the pan out. Not a big deal really even when you can't see in there while you are doing it but putting it back up is another problem.

Drop the pump, bolts, and drive shaft into thr new pan, put the pan up there, stick 1 hand in the pan...yes, you can only get one hand in there...now get the shaft into the pump, get the pump up there with a bolt and put it in the right place...all while not being able to SEE anything you are doing, and all with one hand. Once you get all that done, now you gotta get the gasket put in.

Getting it out is the easy part...going back together is where everyone runs into trouble.

<edit> crap, you have the little motor....that's different. I didn't even know they came with a v6.

if you get the gasket through the ford dealer, it is a one piece rubber gasket that comes with little stakes that screw into the pan bolt holes in the block, and they hold the gasket in place while you are playing with everything else.

Anyone know why the FSM says to drain the cooling system also when doing a pan on a v6?

maybe they think since you are lifting the front of the motor, that you would remove the radiator first???

just take an agle grinder and cut the pan out

It doesn't say to remove the radiator...just says drain oil, cooling, jack motor up 1 inch, put blocks between mounts to hold it....go to pan.

Never seen anyone pull the radiator to do a oil pan on a ford like this before. I'll have to do my E-150 soon...my temp patch is leaking now. :tonka: But it's a v8.

Nope, just whining a bit about this frequent problem with the Ford oil pans. I have no expectation that they would or should fix it. I realize every car/motor has their own little quirks and problems. In fact, I really shouldn't bitch because I love the motor. This is my 4th truck with the same motor and same problem.

But there really is a problem with them and Ford should have been made to correct that. I can't tell you how many we changed in the dealership....it was tons. And they seem to rot from the inside out....by the time you see the grey paint start to blister, it's too late, the hole is already there.

Muddy you seem to have so pretty good experience in this matter. I guess my question (without crawling under there again which I will do later) is what is the constriction under there that keeps the pan from just dropping out on it's own?

I know my 92' 2 wheel drive had a frame crossmember under the pan, but this truck does not.

Must have had too many when I looked at it last night :tonka:

The suspension/frame crosses over just under the pan so I can see how the engine will need to be lifted.

It is a 1993 BTW

Lemme know how it goes my dads 96 F150 with a 302 is leaking like crazy every time he comes over and parks in my driveway he leaves a big ass puddle.

300 I6 (no V6's until recently right ) is a great motor just give it a little extra time on the highway! What am I telling you this for you know it already you owned three more than i have
