axle math

Ok 1978 corp. 10 bolt

I'm trying to figure out what gears
I counted the ring and pinion and came up with 40 and 12(I think, I was under attack by a swarm of Africanized killer skeeters).

The math says 3.33 but I've never heard of that.

Just in case...
1978 1/2 ton 4x4
350/350 auto
rear is a 12 bolt
to my knowledge, original gears

The numbers should be on the side of the ring if you rotate it. You probably counted wrong and its 41/12 = 3.42, which is a common Chevy ratio.

if you want an extra 12-bolt for shafts/brake hardware, I have a complete 3.08 for $50.

Yep, just count again. Use something like a grease pencil to mark the starting tooth, and every 5th tooth or something, to keep track.

And as mentioned, with a chevy axle, you will probably come up with something like : 3.08, 3.42, 3.73, 4.10
