I was thinking 36mm. I know I have a socket for my Ram, but that's a Dana 60.

Went outside. The D60 is way bigger than 36mm, so that might be correct for the D44. I couldn't find my D60 socket.

I used an 1 3/4" socket that I turned down on a lathe to work. You could use the bench grinder to do the same thing.

The socket was to thick to fit into the hub to fully engage on the nut :tonka: So I turned the outside diameter so it would fit.

There isn't a clearance problem like that on a unit bearing Dodge D60. I think he means the inside of the SAE socket is loose on the nut.

There was on the one I had done, it was a 94-95 1500 i believe. Definitly had hub clearance issues. Maybe they got better in the newer hubs, all I know it was a PITA.

I would assume that the 1500's D44 hub would be smaller and the clearances around the nut would be tighter - especially if it was the same size nut as the D60.

When I did my front axle u-joints (D44 front) on my truck, I can't remember what size nut I used but I didn't have to turn the outside of it or anything like that to pull the hub off.

Good thing you didn't. If you turned the outside of the nut, it would be pretty hard to get off, Mr. ASE.
