flywheel replacement on a 90 full size

It's a 2wd 1500 with a 305. What I am wondering is what is the easiest way to replace the flywheel. Can I just scoot the trans back a little, take out the bolts for the flywheel, remove and then reinstall everything? Someone told me that you can but I thought I would ask on here first before I attempt it.

Here is the Service Info for a 1996 5.0 ltr. You will have to move the trans back far enough to gain access, so at that point why not drop it.

Engine Flywheel Replacement
Removal Procedure
Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission or in Manual Transmission.

Remove the flywheel bolts.
Remove the flywheel.
Clean the mating surfaces of the crankshaft and the flywheel. Remove any burrs.
Inspect the flywheel for burning, scoring, warping, and wear. Replace the flywheel if necessary. Do not machine the flywheel.
Inspect the flywheel ring gear for worn or broken teeth.
Installation Procedure

Install the flywheel.
Install the flywheel bolts. Tighten
Tighten the flywheel bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Install the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission or in Manual Transmission.

Just done this to my brother's truck on monday. We just slid the trans back mainly because in a dirt drive with a lowrider it was easier than lifting the truck up to drop the trans...lol

My old buddy Elmer could change a flexplate without dropping the driveshaft. he would slide it back and let the center settle. the bottom bolts get removed first and he would put in 4" ones, then it couldn't get out of position.
