Towing with a ZJ XJ ?

What is the towing cap.# I have a 93 ZJ with a straight 6 auto
are the trannys good our are they weak.

I have a 93 xj with the straight six and it tows a really heavy 6*12 utility trailor just fine.

your owners manual will have the recommended towing weights, including tongue weight.

you may be able to tow more, but the vehicle is not designed for it, ESPECIALLY THE BRAKES!

Owners manual will tell you 6,500#.

I would rather stab myself in the heart with a bic pen then tow 6,500# behind a Grand Cherokee.

my 98' Chevy 2500 4x4 is only rated at 6000# Manuals are definatly right.

Actually, I think the manual will tell you 5000# for the 6 cyl, 6500# for the V8..

Maybe I'm wrong, though..

I have towed about 2500 lbs with my XJ, it felt fine. that was a flatfender on a tow dolly. I don't think I'd feel comfortable towing anywhere near 5000 lbs with it.

I'm considering using my XJ to flat tow my Toyota, which is about 3500 lbs, only up to 55mph, no freeways. But not sure if I want to risk that or not. Brakes is the biggest issue..

I believe you're right.....I have a 95 ZJ with 4.0L and it's only rated to tow around 5k with 3.73 gears. If he has the 3.55's it would be less.
