Decent "Inexpensive" Winch?

My dad has a suzuki samurai and I was thinking about pooling some money together with my other family members and getting him a winch. Anybody have a reccomendation? Something in the 300$ range perhaps? The sammy is small, so I don't think he'd need a very big one. Lemme know, thanks in advance.

A Warn M6000 would be perfect but not as cheap as the milemarker..

when you can afford the upgrade, synthetic rope would be a nice weight saving upgrade.

I'll probably run a M6000 or M8000 on my flattie, whenever I get around to building it..

Harbour Freight ... milemaker 8000 with mounting plate ... $299 with remote and like 15 feet of cable. I hard wired mine to a 3 way switch, temporary up and down, neutral is the center. Works great!

The only downfall is it is not as fast or quiet as a warn or other name brands, but works great. I believe 5k are available?

the winches at harbor freight are NOT milemarkers. they are chicago electric and are a similar design to the old ramsey winches. I know of a few that are reliable and a few that havn't been. Quality Control seems to be where they skimped, though I know more that have been abused and still work then the latter.

On a sami you can not go with a 3k winch because when you are stuck its pulling against way more then the weight of the sami, its pulling against the wight of the sami, plus the suction in the mud, snow, etc... plus weight of upgrades and depending on angle of pull you could be Pulling more as well.

Milemarker 8k is the way to go, I would have one but I got an outstanding deal on my 12k winch.

From what i hear rule of thumb is take weight of vehical x2 thats your totall.. personally i dont like to see a winch cable snap or a winch fail.. so i say x3 or 4 would be better.. But thats just me.. i always go overkill when possbile better to have then to want...

I just bought a harbor freight 10,000lb winch. $350 with roller fairlead and mount plate. its a 4.8 hp motor....it just has a slow line speed...but if you need it, you need it.

6k Chicago Electric from Harbour Freight have seen several sammi's with them and never heard anybody complain about it other than the slow line speed, but then again, it's not really a good idea to be in a rush when winching anyways, that's when people get hurt. fast lines are only needed for the comp rigs where time matters, and the people are very experienced.
