Harmonic Balancer Removal

I got an old 258 (I think, I'm having a little difficult time measuring the stroke while it's in the block). I'm trying to haul the crank and rods out to see if they're still useable, but I can't get the blasted balancer off (without forseeing destroying it, I'd like to have it just in case) and get the timing chain cover off to pull the crank out.

I know this is a really dumb question...

but are you using a proper harmonic balancer puller, or a 3 jaw?

If you're not using the right tool, it can really make things a PITA. Otherwise, try lubing the threads and using an impact gun to turn the bolt in.

All I have is assorted 3 jaw pullers, which I can see tearing it apart with. Actuallyyyyy, I just now thought of an idea that could work. I have some rod that I can cut up and place under the inner wheel and hook the 3 jaw to them.

if that doesn't work, how would an impact gun drive it off? seems all it would do is crank it on tighter. If I turned it the other way it just unscrews.

save yourself time and trouble. Autozone rents harmonic balancer pullers for free (deposit required)

since you torqued on the outer ring. I wouldn't trust it anymore. That is an elastomer ring that allows for it to absrb vibes thru the outer ring. If you have never seen a harmonic balancer fail and the damage it can and will do. I would search it out. Before you decide to reuse the one you just reefed on with the puller.

Now got to an auto parts store and rent a harmonic puller, if not buy one.

actually I didn't torque on it, I saw that comming first thing. I haven't done anything to it because every idea I had would mess up that outer ring.

for not thinking of autozone.

Thanks guys!

I worded that wrong. That was actually supposed to say something along the lines of "If you ARE using a balancer puller, try using an impact to turn it...".

Disregard my previous statement of stupidity.
