Flat towing questions

Does the vehicle being flat towed have to be registered or have a license plate? Any way to hook up one of the universal tow bars to an XJ?

Technicly (sp) yes, but a lot of guys I know do it with out a plate and never get bothered. The truck being towed is considered a trailer I would think. Just my .02

Are you talking just to get it home ? or long term use ? long term use.. get a trailer

On an XJ, you'd really need to get some solid mounts like the way tow hooks are bolted on.

There's a good amount of stress on the brackets when tow bar-ing. Had one snap off the frame on my CJ-3a when we were mowing it, that wasn't fun.

BTW, do you still need a tow bar? I have one on there flattie, I think its a 5000lb universal draw tite.. I'd have to go get it(the jeeps in the barn near Lapeer) but I don't need it anymore...

My understanding is that if any of the wheels are on the pavement, it must be titled, plated, and insured. If it is completely loaded on a trailer, it is just cargo. But, the trailer must be plated.

Sorry to but in like this, but are you looking to get rid of a tow bar? If so Im looking for one to flat tow my CJ5.

X2!!!! Last time a friend and I flat towed a non insured car, the cops stopped us and called a wrecker. We were less than a mile from my friends house, the destination, and were only on back roads.

we used a chain and pickup truck to drag an firebird home to buddy's house. drug it through 2 towns with no problems.. no plates, no insurance. hll no brake lights..

no a plate is not required . we impound cars for the law with no plates but there allowed to tow them out by legal means , which would include a tow bar .

Thanks for the offer Jesus , but it looks like I won't be getting the XJ anyways. I can't find a place to store it when it's not being wheeled.
