Axle Puller

Got a couple of questions for you fellow Jeepers. On my '83 CJ7, I have a rear axle seal leaking. Need to pull the axle to replace the seal. Everything I have read states I need an axle puller (looks just like a slide hammer). Is this true, and if so, where can I get one? Anyone ever done one?

I dont think you need one... just yank....

Axle puller= Slide Hammer with an axle attachment :)

Can be gotten for rent (well loan, just a deposit) at Autozone, bought fairly cheap at Harbor Freight, or for a little more at Sears, or most any suto store.

They usually just slide out..

If you can't get it, take your brake drum, put it on backwards, thread on the lugnuts just enough to stay on, pull the brake drum out fast, it'll hit the lug nuts and work like a slide hammer..

A crow bar works to pop them out too.

Will check with auto parts store for puller attachment if need. Will try sliding it out, but nothing else has gone easy, don't expect this to either. Do plan to put the Aussie Locker in while the axles are out.

That's similar to the method I use I keep an old rotor around for it. it works good for pulling the front bearing assemblies on the newer jeeps too (leaving the axleshaft attached as to avoid seperating the bearing assembly)

Iceman, defiantely try it yourself before looking for a tool, as they usually do just pop out.

Thanks Jesus , am going to try it this evening or Tuesday. Depends on the weather how I feel when I get home. Since it's starting to rain, and I rode the bike, might just want to veg when I get home.

If the reverse brake drum fails, I attach a 3'-4' lenght of chain to a lugnut and give a firm tug.

Well the one side that was leaking came right out, the bearing was trashed. The other side still has a good bearing and there is the problem. The bearing doesn't want to come thru the hole in the brake backing plate. Looks like I have to take the plate off with the axle. That means I will have to disconnect the other backing plate and have them mounted prior to pressing on the bearing and ring.

Does this sound right, or am I not seeing something.

Killer B has a press, and he only charges a couple bucks. Hes out in Rochester, so not to far away for ya

Thanks, forgot about him, will call him up. As soon as I get the brake lines off the backing plate so I can remove them as well.:miff:

Yep, you need to remove the backing plates, as they act as bearing retainers.


REgarding pressing the bearings, pretty much most old-timey auto parts places will do it. My local place (indianwood Automotive) does it for me for $10.

It doesn't take too much, my buddy used his 12 ton harbor freight press to do them on his WJ.

Perhaps you guys have such as press at ABC. Otherwise, I'd call a couple auto parts stores. I'd say replace the one thats still on the other shaft, too, given that the first is trashed.
